Man Brought Back To Life After 47 Minutes With No Pulse

Brooklyn's Joe Tiralosi doesn't remember much about that day in August when he went to New York Presbyterian Hospital feeling sick and disoriented, then collapsed. But last week the 56-year-old father of two visited the hospital to thank doctors for not giving up on him just because his heart stopped beating for 47 minutes after a sudden cardiac arrest. All told, it took 4,500 chest compressions and eight shocks from a defibrillator to bring him back from the brink. Doctors are calling it a medical miracle, but Tiralosi's also lucky the E.R. he visited happened to have some special equipment.

Obama Fried Chicken Owner Wanted $3K For Video

After they pointed out that the Obama Fried Chicken sign was mysteriously blurred out in a new Clipse video, Brokelyn talked to video director Rik Cordero to find out why. He told them: "The decision was made by the owner of the restaurant, who wouldn't sign our location agreement unless we paid him $3,000 cash. Therefore, the sign had to be edited out for network television. I can’t really knock the guy, because taking out the sign has now given Obama Fried Chicken even more free promotion than if we had left it in." But did anyone on the shoot try the chicken? The question remains.

Video: Biking Rules Video Contest Winners

You'll recall that last week Transportation Alternatives held their Biking Rules PSA Festival at BAM, featuring 40 PSAs created to promote bike safety and responsible cycling (i.e., not pedaling fiendishly down the sidewalk and running over pedestrians, etc.). The videos competed in two main categories, "Why Biking Rules" and "Street Code." Here's one of the winners in the shorter "Street Code" category, which will be broadcast on local TV, at outdoor summer films, and at cultural venues like BAM. Winners Aldo Arias and Pam Tietze also got a cool two grand, which will buy a lot of magical bike lights.

Video: New School Students, Comrades Toss Trash Pre-Arrest

Student activists have released two more videos to complement last week's footage of an NYPD officer violently arresting a protester during a march in solidarity with student protesters at the University of California. Both videos depict some of the activities leading up to the arrest of two individuals—neither of whom are actually enrolled at the New School, according to university spokeswoman Deborah Kirschner.

Video: Discovering the Flushing Pimp

The WNYC "Radio Rookies" recently went on a search for the "Flushing Pimp," whom many have consistently seen on the streets in Queens throughout the years (he's even got a Facebook page dedicated to him). Their search took some dark turns, however, when they ultimately found out through his sister that he died, after battling spinal cancer, lung cancer and two brain tumors. He was also allegedly schizophrenic, which was triggered after his mom died when he was 19. So, while this isn't as whimsical as we'd hoped, it's sweet he's been given a posthumous tribute.

Obama Fried Chicken Cut From Video

Remember that whole Obama Fried Chicken debacle? It's back, in a sort of blurred-out-on-MTV kind of way. Brokelyn reports that the Clipse video for “Popular Demand (Popeye’s)” consists mostly of Clipse and Cam'ron and company "in front of a place with a blank yellow marquee." That is, if you see it on MTV, it will appear blank—everywhere else it's running with a fully in-focus sign, reading "Obama Fried Chicken." So whose call was it to lift the OFC sign from the final cut? Surely the artists picked that spot for a reason besides censoring it out.

Video: Sad Panda, Behind the Mask

Be warned: this video of Sad Panda will melt even the coldest of hearts. The fact is that Sad Panda (sometimes Spongebob Squarepants) is actually pretty sad, and that makes us Sad Humans.

Arizona Rep. to Bloomberg: What If Terrorists Kidnap Your Kid

A Republican Arizona Congressman who opposes the plan to hold the trials for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other suspected terrorists in Manhattan asked Mayor Bloomberg how he would feel if his daughter was "kidnapped at school by a terrorist." Though Bloomberg's daughters — Emma, 30, and Georgina, 26 — are well past school age, Rep. John Shadegg raised the question on the House floor on Monday while trashing a decision he described as "political correctness run amok."

Family Claims NYPD Cover-Up In Bar Brawl Shooting

The family of a man killed by cops during a Cypress Hills bar brawl are alleging a police coverup. The brother of a man was shot and killed by undercover cops is demanding that the NYPD release surveillance video that allegedly shows the 43-year-old Kevin White pointing a gun at officers moments before his death.

Cab Driver Says Super Mario Bros Threatened to Kill Him

The cab driver seen on surveillance video getting pummeled on Halloween by two men costumed as Super Mario Brothers spoke out about his ordeal at a rally for taxi driver safety yesterday. Senegalese immigrant Ndiaye Serigne, 48, told reporters, "I was really scared....At the time, I really think I'm going to die." Serigne says he was driving four costumed men back to Staten Island around 4 a.m. on November 1st when one turned off the meter, reached into his pocket, and grabbed $210. "Now it's a free ride," the suspect said.

Access-A-Ride Nailed by Local News

Fox 5 is really sticking it to the taxpayer-funded Access-A-Ride system, exposing one NYPD Auxiliary Police sergeant's apparent abuse of the system, and busting a driver for flagrant on-the-job napping. The Access-A-Ride program, which is managed by NYC Transit, provides transportation for people with disabilities who can't take the subway or bus. Each trip ends up costing about $66 (most of which is covered by taxpayers) and this year the whole program is expected to cost $451 million—which makes this footage of a cop getting picked up by Access-A-Ride to go march in a parade even more galling!

Digital Billboard Wreaks Havoc on Canal

You think that salacious Calvin Klein billboard is distracting... how about this new, menacing digital billboard at the corner of Canal and Hudson? NYC the Blog has video of it in action, and declares it to be a "potential mental health hazard" for those living near by (let's not forget what that glowing Kenny Rogers Roasters sign did to Kramer). Then there's the whole problem of temporarily blinding those operating motor vehicles in a pedestrian-heavy city.

Videos Of State Worker Man Cave Drug Party Surface, Along With Guilty Pleas

The two state workers busted for turning a parking garage storage area into a makeshift drug-fueled rec room pleaded guilty yesterday. Gary Pivoda, 40, a former custodian for the state’s Office of General Service, and his supervisor, Louis Marciano, 50, both admitted to defrauding the government, and Pivoda also pleaded guilty to grand larceny. He'll do a year in prison for dealing drugs out of the so-called man cave, while Marciano got five years’ probation and has to perform 250 hours of community service. Both men must pay thousands of dollars restitution to the state for the time spent sleeping, playing board games, watching TV, and doing drugs while on the clock.

Video: Lego Man Learns Bike Safety the Hard Way

Next Tuesday night BAM will host the Biking Rules PSA Festival, which will be followed by after-party in the BAM lobby with free beer from Brooklyn Brewery. The event is part of Transportation Alternative's initiative to get scofflaw cyclists to follow certain rules, such as giving pedestrians the right of way and obeying traffic lights. (But what about biking with a belly full of free beer?) Earlier this year, the group solicited imaginative PSAs to help promote their Biking Rules, and received submissions from more than 80 artists and filmmakers. Here's one of our favorites:

Video: Coney Island, Seen From an RC Helicopter

This charming aerial video of the Coney Island amusement district is about four months old—eons in Internet time—so if you've seen it already, please do gloat in the comments. NYC The Blog spotted it today, and reports that it's the work of one Jason Lam, founder of aerial photography company Sky Shutter. Lam uses a customized radio control toy helicopter to shoot videos like these, but it's unclear where he gets the cheesy synthesized baroque music to accompany it. (We suggest muting the sound and replacing it with "Coney Island Baby.")

Video: Inside the Mind of a Brooklyn Boxer

Revel New York has released another video in their amazing series, which profiles all sorts of New Yorkers. You already met the Pigeon Lady, but they've also talked to Hester Diamond (Mike D's mom) and now their latest piece delves into the world of Brooklyn boxer Danny Jacobs.

Video: Hawk in Midtown Draws a Sympathetic Crowd

If only the trapped rat had gotten this kind of attention from passers-by. Vimeo user "timmmyk" says he was walking to the subway yesterday evening when he "noticed a large group of concerned people standing around a sick hawk on top of a FedEx van on 48th St. between 5th/Madison. I was among a number of people who called 311 for animal control to rescue this beautiful majestic creature. As the bird flew to a higher perch on a UPS truck it glanced my right ear with its wing. Is that good luck?"

In the same way that Radiohead's seminal album OK Computer perfectly articulated the industrialized world's millennial unease, one Gothamist reader's photograph of a rat stuck in an Upper West Side sidewalk has become a universal metaphor for the pitfalls of urban living. We are all rats, trapped by the, um, race—until the city swallows us up and turns our death into a ridiculous website meme. Our inbox continues to pile up with submissions from readers around the world, who are immortalizing the poor rodent's passing with Photoshop.

NYPD Installing More "Rumbler" Super Sirens

After a successful pilot program, the NYPD is adding a new siren called The Rumbler to over 150 patrol cars; this bad boy blasts a palpable sound wave that can be felt up to 200 feet away. According to The Rumbler's manufacturer [pdf], the siren has "the distinct advantage of penetrating and shaking solid materials, allowing vehicle operators and nearby pedestrians to FEEL the sound waves and perhaps even see their effects through a shaking rearview mirror." The company also warns that the siren and speakers "may cause hearing damage," and those who use it are encouraged to wear ear protection.

Hilarious D Train Fight Caught on Tape

While it lacks the visceral intensity of the San Francisco bus fight video masterpiece, in some ways this audio recording of a nasty argument on the D train is even more enthralling, because it leaves something to the imagination. (We're picturing Edith Bunker vs. Rachel Dratch.) Commuter Joellen Nicholson, who published the video on YouTube, calls it "just another night on the D train comin' home from work. Kudos to the subway Samaritan, who I've named 'Father Subway,' for taking control of the situation."

Video: Fearless Gas Station Clerk Grabs Shotgun From Robber

This video is the greatest demonstration of someone "flipping it" on an adversary that we've seen in some time. Long Island convenience store and gas-station clerk Mustapha Yakupoglu was closing up at midnight Wednesday night when two masked men burst in and pointed a shotgun at his neck, demanding money. But Yakupoglu, who's been robbed twice before, wasn't having it. Check out this deft maneuver, caught by a surveillance camera:

Greenhouse Shut Down After Stabbing, Owner Denies Racism

[UPDATE BELOW] Rumors are swirling about a stabbing at the downtown nightclub Greenhouse, and according to one employee, the club was shut down last night. The closure comes as Greenhouse owners fend off allegations that the club denied entry to approximately 100 people because they are black. Two people have filed a $1 billion class action lawsuit against the ostensibly "eco-friendly" nightclub, accusing the bouncer of barring them from author Teri Woods's book party in August. When Woods arrived at the club she found her invited guests waiting outside. Here's cell phone video of her reaction:

Enraged NYPD Traffic Agent Accused of Racist Assault

This Chinatown surveillance video depicts a heated altercation between an NYPD traffic agent and a car owner on Lafayette Street around 3:15 p.m. on October 8th. The video appears to show irate traffic agent Twana Chapman striking driver Qiang Nian Zhu after he tried to cover his registration sticker, so Chapman could not scan it. A crowd gathers, and Chapman is seen getting in one bystander's face, as another traffic agent pulls her away. But because there is no audio, it's not possible to verify an allegation that Chapman also made racist remarks.

Video: Dog Escapes Vet Clinic

A dog's gotta do what a dog's gotta do—and if that means breaking out of a veterinary clinic after undergoing surgery, so be it! Pharaoh, a 9-year-old German Shepherd, managed to get out of his cage at a Hauppauge, Long Island clinic, and then, Newsday reports, "opened the back door"—which had a deadbolt—"unlatched a gate and fled." Here's video of Pharaoh, wearing his surgical cone, working the door:

Video: New York On The Clock

Thirteen's new series profiling New Yorkers released a new video this week, this time traveling to 33rd and 9th to visit Carlos Sarabia's coffee cart. They say he "emigrated from Jalisco, Mexico to the United States, bringing his mother's breakfast torta recipe with him." He works from Mondays through Friday, starting at sun up — and says he'd like to own his own cafe, where he wouldn't have to confront the harsh weather in the winter.

Stage Manager Fired for iPhone Peeping in Dressing Room

Lincoln Center Theater has terminated the contract of South Pacific stage manager Michael Brunner, after he was arraigned on Friday on a charge of unlawful surveillance. Brunner, 54, has admitted to using his iPhone to videotape one of the actresses in the hit revival. (Pervy spying? There's an app for that.) The actress, whose name is being withheld, discovered the iPod on a desk in her dressing room between acts, and said, "What the hell is this?" She then proceeded to finish the performance, and alerted theater personnel after the curtain call.

Radical Muslim Pedicab Driver Proselytizes As He Pedals

Meet Yousef al-Khattab, a Jewish-born, Jersey-raised convert to Islam who operates a pedicab in Manhattan. The Post describes him as "attention-loving" in a profile that's already up on al-Khattab's website, Revolution Muslim. The site is full of videos showing al-Khattab, who changed his name from Joseph Leonard Cohen, confronting the heathens about their sinful ways. Watch him tear this "Flesh God-worshiping pagan" a new one:

Bridge & Tunnel Vampires in NYC!

While New Jersey may be home to the members of the Court of Lazarus, they meet at NYC nightspots at least once a month. You know what this means? Bridge & Tunnel Vampires! While they admit they cannot turn into bats, they do feed on human blood. It's all consensual, of course.

Gay Bash Suspect's Father Takes Blame, Friend Defends Him

Initial reports about the brutal beating of an openly gay Queens man Friday night (video) mentioned that one of the alleged assailants told the victim, "My father is a C.O. [correction officer]. You will never do anything to us." That stupid boast had been unsubstantiated, until now. Last night the father of Daniel Rodriguez, the second man arrested in the alleged hate crime against Jack Price, came forward to speak to reporters.

Balloon Boy Pukes On TV, But Was That Just For "A Show" Too?

Is the media frenzy over the balloon boy stunt making you sick? You're not the only one! Parents Richard and Mayumi Heene are very busy pimping themselves out to the networks, and they're not about to let their li'l star's stomach virus stand in the way of their precious 15 minutes. This morning Falcon—the six-year-old boy who was hiding in the attic while America was voyeuristically titillated worried sick that he was in a runaway helium balloon—vomited twice on two different talk shows this morning, just like a pussified wus. Here's the Today Show spew, at 5:50 in:
