Car Engine Cat Recovering

The cat who was found in a SUV's engine area is recovering just fine. According to the Daily News, the cat, now named Art, is at a Manhattan animal shelter. Animal Care and Control's David Ziegler said that Art had "fleas and badly-matted fur," adding, "He seems pretty calm, like he's not in any pain. But he's mean. He has been growling." The AC&C is holding him for another day to see if an owner turns up; if not, "they will try to place the cat in a home via a rescue program."

Cat Saved From Car Engine By Detectives

Cats do the darndest things—like hang out in SUV engines and wait for cops to rescue 'em. Seriously, an orange and white cat had be to extracted by Emergency Service Unit detectives when a SUV driver discovered the feline in the vehicle's front hood.

Driver Killed by His Own SUV In Freak Accident

A Staten Island man died early Sunday morning while trying to back his SUV out of a tight parking space in a pub parking lot. Oleg Kantarovich had gone outside to pull the car around for his wife, who was celebrating her 30th birthday, so that she wouldn't get caught in the rain. Police say he was leaning out of the front door of his 2007 Audi SUV as he backed up because it may have been difficult to see through the tinted side window.

School Bus, SUV Collide On Staten Island Street

Yesterday afternoon, a school bus carrying 26 children and a SUV collided into each other—and then into a home's front fence—on Kingdom Avenue at Billou Street in Staten Island's Huguenot section. The Staten Island Advance reports that the Our Lady Star of the Sea School bus had been traveling on Kingdom, while witnesses say the SUV "rolled through a stop sign on Billiou Street, into the path" of the bus. "The front of the bus on the driver's side smashed into the Cadillac's passenger side. The driver's side of the SUV was wedged against a tree toppled in the crash." An 11-year-old student and the SUV's two passengers were treated for minor injuries. The homeowner who found the two vehicles in her front yard told the Post the surrounding streets are a mess, "Everybody is in such a hurry, people run through these [stop] signs all the time. Somebody’s going to get killed," while another neighbor opined, "No one can see the stop signs — or they don’t care. The Escalade blew the stop sign but I’m sure the bus was supposed to be on his block either."

Taconic Crash Mom's Family Continues To Defend Her

The family of Diane Schuler continued their media push, in an attempt to dispute findings that she was drunk and high when she crashed a minivan carrying five children into an SUV carrying three adults on the Taconic State Parkway while driving from a Sullivan County campground back to Long Island two weeks ago. She killed herself, her daughter, three nieces, and the SUV's driver and passengers. Her husband Danny said, "She is not an alcoholic and my heart is rested every night when I go to bed." And today, his lawyer, sister-in-law and a private investigator appeared on the Today show: Lawyer Dominic Barbara said, "We all have to accept certain facts. When she left the campground, she was absolutely sober," while Danny Schuler's sister said, "We just can't explain what happened to Diane," and emphasized her sister-in-law did not drink heavily, only socially.

Bloomberg Commands His SUVs To Stop Idling

After the AP blew the whistle on Mayor Bloomberg's SUV idling away as he attends various events, Bloomberg's spokesman Stu Loeser says the mayor "made it clear" to his police detail that the administration "should set a better example." The administration being one that has supported laws for tougher restrictions on vehicles idling and touted reducing carbon emissions by 30% by 2030. The AP points out that "the city's three-minute idling limit ... does not legally apply to the mayor's SUVs, which are classified as emergency vehicles," but adds, "The mayor isn't just violating his own environmental agenda when he lets his SUVs idle. He's wasting fuel and money." We'll keep an eye on Idle-gate.

SUV Driver Accused of Assaulting Cyclist Identified! (Probably!)

Watch out, meat heads: While administering street justice to cyclists who dare touch your precious vehicle, keep in mind you may be photographed for posterity on the internets. And that photo may lead to other photos, like this one here, depicting one Gus Gonzalez, who Streetsblog believes is the man who allegedly assaulted a cyclist during a road rage on Ninth Avenue incident last month. A lawyer used the license plate seen in the photos track down the vehicle's owner; it's registered to Flushing resident Laura DiSpirito, whose Facebook page (since made private) shows her on the beach with her husband "Gus." We'd know that gut anywhere.

Cyclist Charged For Allegedly Causing Damage To SUV

We've heard about driver vs. bicyclist fights before, but Streetsblog has a really unusual one. Unusual because the bicyclist was charged with criminal mischief for slapping the side of the SUV! From Streetsblog:

[Ray] Bengen, 63, was riding down the Ninth Avenue bike lane on May 21 when he came across the Ford Excursion you see in this photo (curb weight: 7,190 lbs). A long-time city cyclist, Bengen had a green light and wasn't quite sure what to make of the vehicle in front of him. The car wasn't moving and its brake lights were off.

SUV Strikes Apparently Jaywalking Pedestrian On 14th St.

Yesterday afternoon, a pedestrian crossing 14th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues was struck by an SUV. The Daily News reports that witnesses said the pedestrian, who was taken to St. Vincent's with "massive head injuries," was jaywalking. However, the SUV—a Range Rover—may have been traveling at a very fast speed. One witness told the News, "[The driver] was turning the corner. He had to be doing 60. He swerved to avoid the pedestrian, who was running for his life. He didn't make it. He just flew and was bleeding from the head."

Eight Car Pile-Up After SUV Explodes In Brooklyn

Earlier today, a number of cars were involved in an accident on DeKalb Avenue between Wyckoff Ave. and Stockholm. According to the Daily News, "An SUV burst into flames after it was struck by an out-of-control Mercedes that blew through several red lights along a busy Brooklyn street today...Though the SUV was left a burned-out shell and the Mercedes was torn apart after it slammed into a telephone pole, both drivers somehow survived the spectacular 8 a.m. wreck." Unfortunately, a dog was thrown from the Mercedes and died. A witness told the Daily News, "I heard three different crashes. A lot of smoke, you could feel it. You could smell it, like burnt rubber." 1010 WINS says eight cars were ultimately impacted in the accident, with two people going to the hospital (one in critical condition, another in serious) and other people suffering minor injuries. The driver may face criminal charges.

Man Dies After Being Shot, Dumped Onto UWS Street

Police are trying to unravel an incident where a man was shot and then thrown from a moving Chevy Suburban SUV onto West End Avenue at West 72nd Street. The victim was pronounced dead at a hospital. The Daily News reports the vehicle is owned by a Bensonhurst resident who rented his car week-to-week to Jeffrey Bennett, who "had claimed he needed the vehicle for a flower delivery business he had started." Bennett told police he was carjacked at gunpoint by the "unidentified man," who was later "found dumped in front of a ritzy, 12-story doorman building." Plus Bennett's "story had changed several times Saturday night." The Post's version, which was posted earlier, seems to imply that the driver was hijacked by thieves who then "grabbed [the victim] from the street [at West End and 72nd] and shoved" him into the car, only to shoot him and dump him a block away.

Torah Thief Yahweh Uncool

A Torah scroll worth $50,000 was stolen from a rented SUV in Crown Heights yesterday, the Post reports. 21-year-old Levi Havosha says he had just returned from vacation with members of the B'Nai Avraham Synagogue in Brooklyn Heights, and decided to leave the Torah in his vehicle overnight and bring it back to the synagogue in the morning. But when he returned the next day, he found the window smashed and the hand-inked Torah scroll missing. Havosha is praying for the Torah's return, and he also wants to make sure the culprits are aware what they've gotten themselves into: "You're not messing with people anymore, you're messing with God."

DWI Victim's Family Outraged at Wall Street Exec's Plea Deal

The family of a drunk driving victim is crying foul after it was revealed earlier this week that the driver was able to cop a plea that will only land him in jail for eight consecutive weekends. George Anderson was able to land such a light sentence after the DA's office relied on "comparative negligence" reasoning because victim Florence Cioffi was also intoxicated and stepped out from between two parked cars when she was struck by the Wall Street executive's SUV. Cioffi's companion of 18 years says, "I'm not saying that man has to go to jail for life, or 10 years or 11, but 16 days and on weekends? That's ludicrous. It's a rich man's sentence." The family disputes the DA's claim that they were consulted before the plea was struck and plan to attend the sentencing in hopes that they can get the case pushed to a trial. An attorney for the family tells WCBS, "It seems to me [the DA's office] were trying to fly this one under the radar. They didn't want to make a stink about it. They didn't want everyone to know what was going on." The News says that the Cioffis are planning to sue Anderson.

Police are saying that a jammed-up floor mat by the driver side pedals set the stage for a freak accident that left 14 injured when Theodore Saretsky drove through the window of a Hanukkah party in Woodmere. After originally claiming that he thought there was a problem with his SUV's accelerator that led to the crash, now it appears that the mat got wedged between the gas and brake pedals. Nassau County Police spokesman Kevin Smith said, "The mat had slid up and started to roll up, almost like a roll of wrapping paper. Part of that roll was on top of the accelerator, and the other part was behind the brake, and it almost acted like a fulcrum. The harder he stepped down on the brake, the faster the car went. So he's confused by this, and as he looks down, his car veered left into a parked car, and then vaulted into the building." Meanwhile, today's Post credits one man, Dovi Faivish, as being the "modern-day Hanukkah miracle" hero that spotted the SUV about to crash through the party hall window and immediately moved children out of the way, potentially saving several lives. All 14 hospitalized are expected to survive.

A 76-year-old man driving an SUV crashed the vehicle into a building where a children's Hanukkah party was being held. The accident took place on Long Island, in Woodmere, around 2:45 p.m. yesterday. Fourteen people were injured, a dozen of them children. Two children are in critical but stable condition at Nassau University Hospital.

The family of Judy Bucherri are wondering why she threw herself from a speeding SUV to her death on Friday night. Bucherri had been in the car with her boyfriend Sandy Levine, who was later charged with DUI and marijuana possession (the cops found a pound of pot in the car), and inexplicably, she jumped out.

2008_11_LIsuv.jpgPolice are looking for the driver of an SUV who left the scene of an accident that killed a 29-year-old woman and injured her 6-year-old son late Friday afternoon in Inwood. Victoria Cuadros was walking her son Nicholas home from school just before 5 p.m. when they were struck by the vehicle turning at what neighbors say is a notoriously bad intersection. Those on the scene say Cuadros was able to speak after she was hit and they believed she would pull through, but she passed away after being helicoptered to Nassau University Medical Center. Her son, who only suffered minor leg pain from the crash, has not yet been told of his mother's death. At Max's Pizza where his father works, a sign was up in the window yesterday that read "Closed for Mourning." Police, along with friends and family of the victim, are pleading for the driver to turn themselves in.

Natalie Mestre had come outside her apartment around 2 a.m. to check on the altercation involving a group of women taking place out front. There she and five of the other women were hit by the Mercury Mountaineer being driven by Keema Green. Green has been arrested and charged with causing death by motor vehicle while driving with a suspended license. Those charges may be upped to manslaughter following an investigation. There's no word on what caused the skirmish that took place, but police say that Mestre was just a bystander.

There is, apparently, such as a ting as the World Elephant Polo Association--which is why a group of New Yorkers who are participating in a tournament in Nepal later this month were working on their polo skills. But since there were no pachyderms to be had, they had to do so on top of SUV rooftops in Jacob Riis Park. The NY Post sent a reporter to the scene:

Afternoon diners at the Indus Vally Indian restaurant saw their curry spiced up with some shattered glass Saturday when an SUV bearing a Haitian senator plowed into the enclosed patio after being clipped by a cab. Seven passengers from the two vehicles were treated for minor injuries at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, and no one in the restaurant was hurt. Waiter Kabin Hamal told the Daily News, "All the glass came flying. People were hiding under the tables." A hole had to be cut into the roof of the SUV in order to remove the senator—in town to raise money for hurricane relief—and her entourage. A produce seller across the street described the scene to the Columbia Spectator: "I heard some screeching, and then I saw the car turn really slowly into the restaurant. The glass just exploded out of the wall." Hamal added that two diners who were seated where the SUV crashed had vacated their table "like one minute before."

A Queens car wash was the scene of a fatal incident that left one employee dead. Two workers who had been drying a vehicle were hit by another worker who drove into them with an SUV.

The four city officials who are assigned a security detail no longer have to pay the expenses on their taxpayer-funded official cars and drivers when they use them for personal excursions, according to a ruling by the Conflicts of Interest Board. The lucky protected ones are Mayor Bloomberg, Comptroller William Thompson, Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.

A 24-year-old Columbia University student studying late at the library Friday evening is in critical condition at St. Luke's Hospital in Manhattan after his bid to escape a pair of muggers ended in serious injury under the wheels of a Jeep. According to WABC News, the student had just left the library on Columbia's Morningside Heights campus and was waiting for a bus around 9 p.m., when he was approached by two young men. It's unclear whether the student was mugged or already mugged, when he fled into the street near 120th and Broadway.

The video shows the FDNY extinguishing the fire, and GL followed up with an eyewitness account from Greenwood Heights resident Aaron Brashear (who's also in the Concerned Citizens of Greenwood Heights).

Yesterday, the Post reported about a strange and disturbing road rage incident in Red Hook last week. A woman was ultimately repeatedly hit by the driver of a Land Rover.

Big gas guzzling SUV's aren't completely worthless, especially if you need to withdraw some cash in a hurry. A surveillance camera in Orange County New York shows an intrepid robber ramming the back of his SUV through the front of a convenience store in an effort to steal its ATM--the whole machine. Starting at the top left and going clockwise, you can see 1) the SUV slamming through the front of the store 2) the driver pulling forward to give himself some room to work 3) wrestling with the heavy cash dispenser that he knocked over while entering, and 4) lifting it into the back of the vehicle. See, they aren't kidding when they advertise how much cargo space those things have!

Late Wednesday night, an 82-year-old woman crossing Delancey Street at Allen was fatally hit by an SUV driver. The driver, who was traveling west on Delancey, stayed on the scene was not charged with a crime.

Some more details have emerged about the fatal hit-and-run that killed a Brooklyn resident in lower Manhattan Thursday night. Florence Cioffi was fatally struck by George Anderson's Mercedes SUV on Water Street and Old Slip. Anderson had originally fled the scene but later returned, where he was arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and leaving the scene of an accident.
