Rangers 5, Flyers 4 (SO): Maybe in the future coach Tom Renney will start backup goaltender Steve Valiquette against the Flyers. He came in relief of Henrik Lundqvist and stopped 17 of 18 shots, then put forth a perfect performance in the shootout. The reserve, who now has three wins against the Flyers this season, stabilized a game that saw both Lundqvist and Flyers goalie Antero Niittymaki yanked by the time two minutes were gone......

After the Giants' wild underdog Super Bowl win last night, it's no surprise that New York area papers are reveling in this victory. The Daily News give its readers a special commemorative Super Bowl victory cover (inside, there's a traditional front and sports back cover - sans Giants mention). Both the News and the NY Post feature Eli Manning holding the Vince Lombardi trophy. Maybe this is their way of apologizing for ragging on......

Mark Messier will forever be remembered for delivering the Stanley Cup to the Rangers in 1994, his famous guarantee before Game Six of the Eastern Conference Finals that year and a tendency to cry in public. The captain had his number retired by both Edmonton and New York and is the only player ever to captain two teams to a Stanley Cup victory and he was second all-time in points scored in NHL history. Scott......

The 2007 class for the Hockey Hall of Fame was announced yesterday, and Mark Messier and Scott Stevens were both on the list. Messier, the former Rangers captain, and 2nd on the NHL's all-time point list behind Wayne Gretzky, helped the Rangers end their 54-year Stanley Cup drought in 1994. In addition to winning the Cup with the Rangers, Messier won five championships with the Edmonton Oilers. Stevens helped lead the Devils to three Stanley......

Holy smokes! Giant fish on the MTA, Paris Hilton in jail, then out, then in again, Al Gore, goatses, blumpkins, Matt Damon, and baby art critics! It's been a busy week across the Ist-A-Verse, and here's a smattering of what's been going on. In Gothamist's neck of the woods, they found out that many things are possible: A man caught a 40+ pound fish off the Rockaways and took it home on the subway. Graffiti......

Yankees 5 White Sox 1:If the Yankees are going to get off the deck and get back into playoff contention, they will need a lot more nights like this. Chien-Ming Wang was brilliant, going the distance while allowing only one run and six baserunners. Wang also struck out four as he cruised to an easy win, his fifth of the season. The Yankees scored the bulk of their runs in the fourth. Johnny Damon......

-Timberwolves 107, Knicks 89: Lackadaisical defense and inconsistent offense plagued the Knicks, who have lost three straight since undressing the Heat in Miami on Friday. Minnesota torched the Knicks by shooting 53 percent from the floor, and New York couldn't make the most of its shots. Quentin Richardson, one player who has appeared to benefit from Isiah Thomas' coaching, did not score and didn't attempt a field goal in 18 minutes. At least Steve Francis......

-Reds 4, Mets 2: Maybe the Mets want to take another road trip. They're 1-3 on their current homestand after winning eight of nine on their road trip. Tonight, they looked unspectacular against Cincinnati's Bronson Arroyo. Of course, no one expected the Mets to continue the blistering pace of their road trip, and their fans should be pleased with Orlando Hernandez's decent performance against the talented Reds offense. He'll be a useful fifth starter if......

To no one's surprise, Senator Hillary Clinton won the NY State Democratic nomination for this fall's Senate race. Which means she got to use her acceptance speech as a possible preview into a run for the presidency someday. The NY Times said that President Bill Clinton kept talking and talking (about Hillary), "until finally, perhaps realizing he was the only politician left in the room, he turned to go." That Bubba - what an operator!......

Sanids Ozolinsh should give Ed Whitson a call. That might help him prepare to be the most-vilified figure in town. With the Garden rocking and Jagr back in the lineup, Ozolinsh misplayed the puck setting up a 2-on-1 rush that the Devils converted for a goal just 68 seconds into the game last night. The goal sucked the life out of the building and New Jersey went on to win 3-0. The way things are......

Trottier, Smith, Bossy, Potvin, the great names of the Islanders’ past came together last night for a celebration of their 1980 Stanley Cup championship. While seeing all the past greats was a thrill for the fans, the current Islanders looked pretty good too. Chris Campoli scored the game-winner midway through the third period and Trent Hunter added an empty-net goal to give New York a 4-2 victory over Philadelphia. Meanwhile in New Jersey, the Devils......

There have been few athletes in the history of New York who captured the imagination and adoration of the city the way Mark Messier did. When he uttered his famous “We’ll Win Tonight” guarantee before Game Six of the Devils series and then backed it up with a hat-trick, he became one of the true legends of Gotham, up there with Namath, Reed and Jackson. Messier announced his retirement on Monday ending a twenty-five year......

Find out what it means to Tha D. Red Auerbach is safe. Coming into the NBA Finals the old Celtics codger and the Zen Master both had coached their teams to nine championships and the general consensus was that the Lakers would give Phil Jackson number 10. That however was not to be as the Pistons thoroughly dominated the Lakers, winning this years NBA Finals in five games. Instead of focusing on where the Lakers......

Gothamist's heart still flutters when we think about the New York Rangers winning the Stanley Cup ten years ago today. The Daily News revisits that sweet day and also reveals where members of the 93-94 team are today (Esa Tikkanen, whose toothless visage and cheery broken English we remember, is a clothing entrepreneur in Finland!). The NY Rangers also look back on that monumental day, which heralded a ticker tape parade and reason for hockey......

If you're inside recovering from a long day, don't forget to look elsewhere on Gothamist for some good information. This week, Ask Gothamist looked at brokers, at squatters, and at subletting apartments, and getting in shape for this weather. Speaking of weather, Gothamist Weather examined the heat index, how ice cores can reveal historical information, some tips on how to deal with ants in your apartment, and the crossing of Venus. Gothamist Sports included thoughts......

Last night, the Tampa Bay Lightning won The Stanley Cup, defeating the Calgary Flames 2-1 in the 7th game of the NHL Finals. Led by Ruslan Fedotenko's two goals, the 12 year-old Lightning franchise won its first championship and is the first team formed in the 90's to win the Cup. There is nothing quite like a 12 year-old team winning The Stanley Cup, a trophy awarded for 111 years making it the oldest......

With the Stanley Cup Finals starting tonight, Gothamist got to wondering, what is the most physically demanding playoff sport? Assuming we only consider sports in the United States, that limits us to the NBA, NFL, MLS, MLB, and NHL. We're just going to eliminate football and baseball because football plays once a week and baseball, well, if you've seen a baseball game, you know why. The NBA and its players have had an absurd playoff......

Gothamist thought we knew a fair amount about the New York Rangers (we do have the 1994 Stanley Cup Championship video), but we never realized they had the Rangers City Skaters, the icy counterpart to the Knicks City Dancers. That's why the Post's exclusive that MSG executives sexually harrassed, verbally abused, and just acted like buffoons was so surprising. The former captain of the Rangers City Skaters, Courtney Prince, is suing the Rangers, citing instances......
