Judge Hopes Monserrate's Girlfriend Will "Stop Acting Like A Slave"

At the sentencing hearing for State Senator Hiram Monserrate (D-Queens), who was convicted of misdemeanor assault for slashing his girlfriend in the face, Justice William Erlbaum said that three years probation for the freshman senator—plus a 250 hours of community service, a year of domestic violence counseling, and a $1,000 fine—was "what any other person gets in this situation." Still, Queens DA Richard Brown, whose office was hoping for 60 days in jail, said, "In my opinion, [Erlbaum] should have provided for a jail term

The assault conviction stems from an incident where he allegedly accidentally slashed his girlfriend in the face a year ago.

Woman Slashes Husband's Throat Because He's Not Devout Muslim

A Staten Island woman was charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a deadly weapon after slashing her husband's throat with a knife. The police say the devout Muslim woman was upset her husband did not follow Islam strictly, allegedly making her drink alcohol, dress in short skirts, and eat pork.

Hiram Wants To Put A Ring On Slashed Girlfriend's Finger

Sure, State Senator Hiram Monserrate wants to marry his girlfriend Karla Giraldo (at least according to his lawyer)—but there is a snag: That pesky order of protection that prevents Monserrate from contacting Giraldo, since he slashed her face with a broken glass last December! Monserrate and Giraldo both said it was an accident—and Monserrate was acquitted of two felony charges related to the incident but found guilty of a misdemeanor—but the judge still needs to remove the order.

Lawyer: Monserrate And Girlfriend Plan To Wed

Yesterday found State Senator Hiram Monserrate not guilty of felony assault charges but guilty of a misdemeanor—"recklessly causing physical injury" to his girlfriend Karla Giraldo during a December incident where Monserrate slashed her in the face with a broken glass. Today, Monserrate's lawyer Joseph Tacopina said on Good Day New York, "She loves him, as she testified in court. As he said yesterday, he loves her...And they're looking to get back together and resume their marriage...uh, relationship." To which GDNY anchor Rosanna Scotto said, "Will they get married?" and Tacopina replied, "Maybe I said marriage, maybe I let the cat out of the bag, but that's where it's heading."

Monserrate Closing Arguments Single Out A Liar, Inquisition

Queens Assistant District Attorney Scott Kessler delivered closing arguments yesterday in state Sen. Hiram Monserrate's assault trial—and he's sure somebody is a liar. According to the Daily News, the prosecutor argued that the senator's girlfriend, Karla Giraldo, was telling a lie or two in hopes of keeping Monserrate a free man—and from losing his Senate seat.

2 Charges Dropped Against Slashing Senator Hiram, 4 Remain

During the bench trial of State Senator Hiram Monserrate, who is accused of assaulting his girlfriend last winter, Justice William Erlbaum threw out two of the prosecution's charges against Monserrate. The charges were ones that claimed the freshman, coup-loving Senator acted recklessly when he slashed Karla Giraldo's face with a broken glass; Erlbaum reasoned that they conflicted with the prosecution's claim that Monserrate acted intentionally.

Hiram's Jealous Rage Was Triggered by Married Cop

The police officer whose PBA card allegedly incited the jealous rage of Hiram Monserrate is married and denies knowing Karla Giraldo, the state senator's girlfriend who needed 40 stitches to heal from Monserrate's alleged attack. The Post claims that longtime NYPD vet Water Loor is the man whose card has been used as evidence in Monserrate's ongoing assault trial. Monserrate is seen throwing the card down the trash chute on the surveillance video where he apparently drags Giraldo down the stairs. The Post says investigators determined that Loor's relationship with Giraldo had nothing to do with his job or the violent incident.

Monserrate's Girlfriend To Hospital: "He's Crazy!"

During State Senator Hiram Monserrate's assault trial, a nurse testified that his girlfriend Karla Giraldo begged that he not be allowed into the room where doctors were examining the cuts on her face, saying, "He's crazy! He's crazy!" And an ER doctor testified that Giraldo yelled, "I can’t believe he did this to me! My face! My face! I can’t believe my face!"

[UPDATE BELOW, with video] State Senator Hiram Monserrate's girlfriend told hospital workers he had beaten her and slashed her face only because she was drunk, Monserrate's lawyer said yesterday. "Were not blaming her for anything," said famed defense lawyer Joe Tacopina. "But intoxication impairs one's ability to perceive." The Post also notes that Tacopina blamed a "language barrier."

Cash, Pot, iPod, Slashing: Long Island Robbery Turns Violent

According to Newsday, "a robbery of cash and marijuana in Oceanside Friday developed into a melee involving four, police said, when the initial victim apparently tried to strike back by stealing an iPod." Seriously! Here's how it unraveled: Christopher Cagno, 20, allegedly demanded $160 cash and pot from Dylan Peitz, 18, on a street. Cagno managed to take the items and was fleeing in friend Christopher Haig's car—but the car was moving so slowly that "Peitz jumped partially through a window, grabbed Haig's iPod and tried to run." Naturally, Cagno and Haig chased Peitz and a fight broke out. Enter Peitz's girlfriend, Alyssa Reilly, 19, who introduced a knife and slashed at Cagno and Haig. All were arrested and charged with assault—Reilly faces additional charges of possession of a deadly weapon (the knife), Cagno has additional charges of robbery (the cash and pot) and drug possession (the pot) and Peitz has additional charges of petty larceny (the iPod theft) and possession of a deadly weapon (maybe the knife?). The four will be arraigned today in Hempstead.

Police Fatally Shoot Knife-Wielding Woman

This morning, the police shot and killed a woman threatening them with a knife in Brooklyn. WCBS 2 reports, "According to police, the woman attacked the officer on Remsen Avenue just after 7:15 a.m... The woman reportedly slashed the officer in the hands. Police were forced to open fire, fatally striking the woman." The police officer, who had deep lacerations, is in stable condition. Last fall, when a police officer fatally shot a chair-wielding man, the NYPD found it fell within department guidelines (a spokeperson said, "Basically, was there an imminent threat to life or serious injury? That is the defining statement").

No Charges For Boyfriend Allegedly Behind Slashing

Yesterday, prosecutors dropped charges against Aleksander Vacaj, who was accused of hiring two men to slash his ex-girlfriend's face last year in Chinatown. The ex-girlfriend, Artende Gjeli, had been working at 123 Baxter Street when two men grabbed and slashed her. An off-duty NYPD detective had been on the scene and shot the attackers, killing one (pictured, the cut on the head that the detective received during the altercation). According to the Post, the prosecutors' suffered when Gjeli apparently "changed her story about why her ex-boyfriend had been harassing her" and then Vacaj's lawyer "announced he would grill the victim on a host of alleged crimes, including drug smuggling, immigration fraud, shoplifting and perjury." The Daily News adds that Vacaj's lawyer also accused Gjeli of stalking Vacaj, "She was calling my client more than my client was calling her." Vacaj, who served two months in prison, said, "I never had anything to do with anything, and justice was done."

Jogger Assaulted Behind Gracie Mansion

Yesterday afternoon, a female jogger was attacked while in Carl Schurz Park—right behind Gracie Mansion—at East End and East 88th Street—just before 2 p.m. The NY Times reports that the jogger first thought she was just punched but she was actually "slashed across the forehead by a man who walked away."

Elderly Woman Stabbed During Home Invasion

Yesterday, an 86-year-old woman was stabbed repeatedly in the neck and back when a man broke into her home in Springfield Gardens around 6:30 a.m. Police say the robber broke in through a window and put a pillow over Vivian Squires' head as he slashed her. He stole cash, jewelry and her Chrysler sedan. Squires, who has lived in her home for 50 years, is in stable condition at Mary Immaculate Hospital. A neighbor told NY1, "Why would someone try to hurt her? Just take whatever they want and leave. Don't hurt her," while another said, "I don't understand why anybody would assault, let alone a 86-year-old woman, but anyone for that matter, but in this instance someone who obviously cannot fight back. And whoever did it had knowledge of her being here." The Post reports her nephew was home at the time, but slept through the attack; he is considered a "person of interest."

According to the NY Post, police are investigating whether 14-year-old Sabrina Matthews "may have been killed by a boyfriend she recently met over the Internet." Matthews was found by her father in their Cambria Heights home on Sunday; her throat was slit and she was naked from the waist down. The Daily News reports that her father was arrested last year for punching an older daughter; neighbors say the police had come to the Matthews home for a number of "domestic disturbances" related to that daughter. And a neighbor says that there was apparently blood on the Matthews' floor early Sunday morning, claiming the victim's mother told her, "I saw black stuff all over the floor leading down to the basement. I didn't think anything of it. I figured my husband stepped in mud outside."

Yesterday afternoon, a 14-year-old girlwas discovered by her father in their Cambria Heights home in Queens. Sabrina Matthews was "naked from the waist down, with blood gushing from a wound to her throat," in her bedroom, according to the Daily News. The paramedics were unable to revive her.

A man on trial for slashing his roommate with a scalpel was in court "with a spit-shield around his mouth." That's because Akieme Nesbitt's lawyer said Nesbitt spat on him. Nesbitt has gained a certain kind of infamy for badmouthing Judge Carol Berkman; the Post reports, "On one occasion, he told her to 'Suck my d---,' a request to which she responded, 'Application denied.'" Oh, and Nesbitt slashed his roommate because, after he told his roommate he was hoping to work at Pathmark, his roommate said, "I have too much pride to work for Pathmark."

"Give Peace a Chance" is apparently no longer the tune surrounding Central Park's Strawberry Fields, after a stroller mishap led to a man getting slashed. Yesterday evening, a man accidentally bumped into a stroller being pushed by a man and a woman near the park at 72nd St. and Central Park West.

The man accused of slashing Upper East Side psychologist Kathryn Faughey to death and attacking another doctor was arraigned in court yesterday. And 39-year-old David Tarloff, a schizophrenic with a history of violence, made it quite an arraignment.

The police arrested a Queens resident for the murder of a therapist on the Upper East Side. David Tarloff, 39, apparently made "statement implicating himself" in the brutal death of Dr. Kathryn Faughey as well as the attack on Dr. Kent Shinbach, who Tarloff claimed institutionalized him in 1991. Tarloff, who is schizophrenic, has a history of violent crime.

Update: Police have arrested David Tarloff, a Queens resident and former patient of Shinbach's, for Faughey's murder. The Post reports Tarloff, described as overweight with a bald spot by neighbors, has a history of violent crime. Apparently fingerprints found on suitcases left at the crime scene led the police to Tarloff.

The police questioned a friend of Upper East Side psychologist Kathryn Faughey, who was brutally murdered in her office Tuesday night. William Kunsman, who resides in Pennsylvania, voluntarily went to a PA state police barracks in Bethelem for hours of questioning before he was released.

Update: The police questioned and released a man in Pennsylvania about the murders. The police apparently found the man, who had met Dr. Faughey and her husband at a guitar camp, by looking at Faughey's email.

An assistant principal at P.S. 196 in East Williamsburg was arrested yesterday for slashing her live-in boyfriend with a pair of scissors.
