writer and performer, popping up on stages at parties and bars across town to rattle off his unique musical blend into the mic. Whether reporting on Comic-Con, waxing lyrical about Alan Moore, performing with Kochie Banton, auditionining for Gizmodo's theme song competition, or throwing wild parties, he puts 100% of himself into the task at hand, and has a wonderful time doing so.
It's soggy outside but it's cozy at the bookstores and bars this week. Tonight (6/16), Australian writer Peter Carey is reading from his latest book, Theft: A Love Story, at 192 Books at 7PM. Or, head down to the always cozy Half King tonight for the Spring 2006 edition of The Literary Review, where Lynne Tillman, Craig Mueller, and Cary Goldstein will be reading from their selections in the journal. It starts at 7PM and is free.
It's not quite the lusty month of May yet, but spring fever is already gripping the denizens of the city. So for your monthly dose of sexy scribes, head down to Happy Ending Lounge (302 Broome St.) for the monthly In The Flesh Erotic Reading Series. This month's theme is True Confessions, featuring comedian Dan Allen, blogger and novelist Jessica Cutler (The Washingtonienne), Columbia Spectator sex columnist Miriam Datskovsky, among others, and hosted by the fabulous Rachel Kramer Bussel. It starts at 8PM and is free.
Just before the New Year, Extra Tasty a new site by The Skinny Corp (perhaps best known for the tee-shirt site Threadless) launched so "you'll never be sober again." Besides cataloging recipes by tags, liquors, mixers and garnishes, the site lets you build your own bar and spits out recipes of what you can make with, say, only rum and coffee liqeur (answer: Black Cuban). Of course, in order to build your bar you need to set up a free account, becoming part of a network able, in theory, to submit recipes to the database (be a hero and add Mai Tai intead of the current MyTai), rate recipes on a five star system and comment on other recipes. We say "in theory" because Extra Tasty is still pretty beta- all you can do at present is submit recipes and see a "Commenting will be pretty neat when we make it work!" message when you attempt to comment.
With Thanksgiving just moments away, literary events in New York have gone into standby mode. Nonetheless, there are few things happening this week and a few things to keep your eyes on for next week. And, as a little gift to you from the city, it's all free! Happy Thanksgiving.
This week's issue of New York magazine is the Annual Sex Issue, with alarming and titillating articles about marriage with benefits (dude, marriage is so cool!), and the old gay man scene (you know, baldness is a sign of extra testosterone), but the article that captivated Gothamist was the sex columnist roundtable, which included our very sexy contributor, Rachel Kramer Bussel, who writes for the Village Voice and Penthouse (her picture, at right). Other columnists (all of them female) were Stephanie Klein, DC sex-fiend Jessica Cutler, former Redbook-now Penthouse contributor Elise Nersesian, our alma mater's paper's sex columnist Miriam Datskovsky (all the good things at Columbia happen AFTER we leave), and NY magazine columnist Amy Sohn. We tip our hat to these ladies, because Lord knows we wouldn't be able to handle our high school teacher telling us he reads a sex column we wrote. But it's good to know that doing antidepressants and coke makes one write faster - we'd been wondering that.
Warning: all of the links in this post should be considered Not! Safe! For! Work! Do not click any of them if you are still at the office.
At this point, Gothamist is more enthralled by the Real World Road Rules challenge than either of the actual shows that lend it their name. I mean come on! Tonya pretends to be so misunderstood! Katie and Veronica hate each other! Coral secretly has really bad bangs! Now that's good television.
Catch up on the interviews here. This week brings interviews from Lily & Aaron. Last week, Nichelle introduced us to performance artists and the executive editor of Stuff; two weeks ago, we had interviews from Rachel (like quizmasters) and Mindy & Raphie (swing state activists).

BookExpo America will be in NY next year; for Chicago news, certainly check out Chicagoist. And when Gothamist remembers to think of it, we do watch Book Notes.
