According to reports, Mike D’Antoni has agreed to become the next coach of the Knicks. D’Antoni will receive a four-year/$24-million deal to move from Phoenix where he led the Suns to 50+ wins in every full season he coached. The Knicks, who haven’t had a winning season since 2000-01, will presumably install D’Antoni’s high-octane offense and attempt to run like Phoenix has the past few years. The problem is, the Knicks don’t have the players......

Some L.A. Lakers fan (we assume) came up with a brilliant plan to psych out Phoenix Suns guard Leandro Barbosa last week. Barbosa fell victim to a hoax where his hotel gave him a message saying that Suns GM Steve Kerr wanted to meet him to discuss a trade to the New York Knicks. Jeez, that's maybe the meanest prank call we've ever heard! The Brazilian player sought out assistant coach and mentor Dan D'Antoni......

The New York Knicks are the most entertaining team in the NBA. Not because of the team's play on the court, but because of the soap-opera-like drama that takes place off the court. During Knicks practice yesterday, Isiah Thomas said that he's not walking away from the team he created. "If there's one thing that I hope all of you know about me, or will learn about me, I fight 'til I die. It's not......

If CBS News Writers Strike, Democrats Will Nix Debate Several presidential candidates - Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and Bill Richardson -have announced their intentions not to cross picket lines for a debate sponsored by CBS News on December 10th. The Writers Guild of America announced earlier this week that its members who work for the network’s television and radio operations at both the national and local level have authorized a strike vote. The members have......

Sacramento 123 Knicks 118 (2OT’s); You weren’t dreaming, that really was Stephon Marbury playing defense. Marbury didn’t start, but he had a nice game off the bench as Isiah went to a three-guard lineup in the fourth quarter. With Crawford and Robinson sharing the point, Marbury took over at the two and did well. Eddy Curry had a huge game with 27 points including a game-tying rebound and layup with 10 seconds left in regulation,......

Bad news is staggering down from Young Frankenstein’s extravagant Broadway castle: When critics begin gathering with pitchforks and torches next weekend, the show’s star, Roger Bart (he plays the titular role Gene Wilder made famous in the film), may be benched with a herniated disc. A monstrous problem indeed, as the part demands extensive dancing, and according to Michael Riedel, Mel Brooks is panicking. (Isn’t Larry David available?) A little birdy tells Riedel: "One scenario......

Orlando 94 Knicks 89: It’s the simple things that the Knicks seem incapable of doing and it cost them again Monday. In this case, it was a simple defensive decision, to switch or not to switch. Mardy Collins and Nate Robinson didn’t communicate and the result was a wide-open three-pointer by Jameer Nelson that erased a lead and led to their downfall. Yes, it appeared that Dwight Howard committed a goaltending violation on Stephon Marbury’s......

“This is a great day for the New York Knicks and our fans. Larry Brown is not just one of the best coaches in the NBA today, but in its history. He has made every team he has ever coached a winner, with a legendary approach to teaching and motivating his players. His value to us as a franchise at this time is immeasurable.” Those were the words of Isiah Thomas less than eleven months......

It took six tries, but Larry Brown finally has his first win as the head coach of the New York Knicks. Last night, the Knicks held off the Sacramento Kings to win 105-95. Despite leading for 19 points in the first-half, the Knicks let the Kings back into the game in the 3rd quarter. Despite letting the Kings cut the lead to 6, the Knicks didn't fold up shop like they have so many times......

Larry Brown still longs for his first win as the head coach of the New York Knicks. At 0-5, it would be nice if that win would come sooner than later. Last night, the Knicks came mighty close against the Golden State Warriors, but lost the game in the final minute, 86-84. Despite the fact that the Knicks came out to play in the first quarter (ha, we're so funny), ending the first period of......

So, on the cover of yesterday's NY Times sports section was this huge picture of New Jersey Nets small forward Richard Jefferson (RJ!) hugging point guard Zoran Planinic after a third quarter shot against the Utah Jazz, and we thought to ourselves, "This is some hug...not that there's anything wrong with that." But these are exciting times for Nets, as exciting as being on top of the Atlantic Division five games into the season can......

Yesterday, New York Knicks shooting guard Allan Houston announced his retirement after 12 years in the NBA. With the Knicks for 9 seasons, Houston retires as fourth on the Knicks' all-time scorer list, ranks 2nd in all-time three-pointers with the team, and as a career 40.2% three-point shooter. Houston, 34, has had knee troubles for several years and has seen limited action in the last two seasons, playing only 70 games. Pressing to return after......

Even though the season's winding down, the New York Knicks are taking advantage of spring fever and organizing another Singles Night at Madison Square Garden. After a successful event earlier this year, Gothamist is teaming up with the Knicks again for an evening of mixing and mingling before, during and after a game against the Atlanta Hawks on April 17. Tickets are $75, which includes a discounted $60.50 ticket in the Singles area, food and......

Reader Elizabeth asked Gothamist if we could get to the bottom of the strange news that Jersey City's singles scene outranked New York City's - Jersey City is 11 and NYC is 18. Alarmed, we got to work. First, it seems that website Sperling's Best Places did a survey with AXE Deodorant, "using 24 distinct criteria including, among others: population density, percentage of singles, frequency of hooking up, dating venues such as coffee shops, bars,......

While some people moan and groan about Valentine's Day, Gothamist thinks that there's lots of fun to be had. We've teamed up with the New York Knicks and Bud Light for a night to remember on February 13: Speed-dating during the Knicks-Bobcats game! When the NY Knicks asked us what we thought of the promotion, we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to do two things everyone should try at least once - see......

As if America didn’t have enough going on today, the 2004/2005 NBA season kicks off tonight with a doubleheader on TNT (how’s that for some election coverage counter programming?). The local teams don’t get started until tomorrow when the rebuilt Nets will take on Shaquille O’Neal and the Miami Heat at the Meadowlands and the Knicks travel to the Twin Cities to take on last year’s MVP and the Twolves. Both the Knicks and Nets......

This Globe & Mail article about Spike Lee is interesting because it starts out asking if Spike and Woody Allen were separated at birth:Don't scoff. Check the evidence: They're both single-minded, jazz-loving, Brooklyn-born filmmakers, known by their first names, who crank out an average of about one film a year. They're equally adept at comedy and drama, frequently lean on their own regular repertoire of actors, occasionally appear in their own films, and are often......

Looking for something to do this long holiday weekend? If you're as obsessed about architecture as Gothamist, you might want to check out the Fourth Annual Bridge Street Development Corporation (BSDC) Show House. Located at 380 Lewis Avenue, this 112 year-old brownstone was suffering from a half-century of neglect, until it was renovated last year. What sets 380 Lewis apart from previous BSDC Show Houses (also renovated brownstones) is its subdivision into condominiums, presenting a......

We posted a few days ago that Marv Albert was out as the Knicks play-by-play broadcaster. What has transpired in the last few days since then has created an intense debate in the New York sports landscape. Gothamist is here to catch you up to speed. WFAN was first to report the departure of Marv Albert, they also reported that as soon as the negotiations had started to breakdown with Marv and the Garden. Marv......

Yesterday, Marv Albert and Cablevision parted ways, ending his affiliation with the New York Knicks and Madison Square Garden, both owned by Cablevision. In the process of negotiating a new contract, the two sides seemed to disagree over the value of Albert's contract and over his criticism of the Knicks. The Post reported that management was fed up with Albert's criticism and Albert was fed up with the complaints, while The Times reports that Albert......

The New York Knicks and the New Jersey Nets will meet each other in the first round of the NBA Playoffs this Saturday. It has already been dubbed the "Bridge and Tunnel Battle", the "Lincoln Tunnel Series", the "Tunnel Tussle", and the "Battle of the News" (we came up with that lame one). It's Stephon Marbury vs. Jason Kidd, Old (Coach Wilkens) vs. New (Coach Frank), Knicks vs. Nets, Marbury playing his old team, it's......
