Jets Have Revenge On Mind Vs. Dolphins

Miami knocked the Jets from the playoffs in Week 17 last season and delivered a 31-27 defeat in South Florida earlier this season. So the Jets, who finally ended a three-game last week against the lowly Raiders, have some extra motivation against the Dolphins at the Meadowlands.

Mark Sanchez Makes Lemonade Out Of Hot Dog Incident

Aw, rookie Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is still trying to make amends for—gaspeating a hot dog during Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders. The AP reports, "Sanchez has bought 500 hot dogs and 500 hamburgers, along with buns and rolls, through A&P supermarket, and donated them to the Community Soup Kitchen of Morristown, N.J." Hey, where's the mustard?

Mark Sanchez Sorry For Hot Dog Snack During Jets Blowout

Just because you're the 22-year-old quarterback of the New York Jets and your team is dominating the (terrible) Oakland Raiders, it doesn't mean you can eat a hot dog because you're HUNGRY! Mark Sanchez found out yesterday when he was caught sitting on the sidelines eating a hot dog during the fourth quarter. Critics said he was being disrespectful to the Raiders as well as his teammates who were out on the field playing.

After Three Straight Losses, Jets Travel to Oakland

What has happened to the Jets? Three straight wins to open the season had them flying high, but now three consecutive losses, including one to the lowly Bills at home, has the Mark Sanchez Messiah Watch on hold. And make no mistake, Sanchez has been to blame for two of the three losses. His turnovers cost the Jets against the Saints -- they led to two return touchdowns -- and he had a five-interception meltdown in last week's 16-13 overtime loss to the Bills.

The Giants were shellacked by the New Orleans Saints, with the Saints winning 48-27, while the Jets were terrible, losing to a bad Buffalo team in overtime, final score 16-13.

Last Night's Action: Jets Not Wild About Wildcat

  • Dolphins 31, Jets 27: The lead changed five times in the fourth quarter, but the last score -- a two-yard run by Miami's Ronnie Brown with 10 seconds to go-- proved the difference. Rex Ryan's defense couldn't contain the Dolphins' wildcat formation, which gained 110 yards. If not for two fake punts in the first-half, the Jets could have been in deeper trouble. Braylon Edwards, making his Jets debut, scored a touchdown and set up two others. The savior Mark Sanchez was 12 of 24 for 172 yards and a touchdown. The Jets' defense, which was beaten all game, deserves the bulk of the blame for this one.

    • Giants 27 Kansas City 16: The Chiefs fumbled away the kickoff to New York and things didn’t get much better from there. New York built up a 27-3 lead and then took it easy in the fourth quarter with the game out of hand. Steve Smith continued his dominant season with 11 catches for 134 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Jets, Saints Face Off in Battle of Unbeatens

Mark Sanchez is 3-0 and the first rookie quarterback since the AFL and NFL merged in 1970 to reach that mark. The Jets are flying high despite a brutal schedule and the implementation of a new system. A game at New Orleans against the high-flying Saints offense could be their stiffest test yet.

Despite the rain, it was a perfect Sunday in New York- if you are a sports fan. Let’s start with the Yankees who completed their sweep of the Red Sox by winning 4-2 and clinched the AL East and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Yankees will have a week to prepare for the opening of the playoffs where they will face either Detroit or Minnesota.

Jets Face Titans as Titans at Home

Raise your hand if you had the Jets at 2-0. Put them down if your first name isn't Rex or Mark. Not too many left, right? The surprising Jets go for their third straight win Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, the best team in the AFC during the 2008 regular season. But the Titans will be hungry for their first win after losses to Pittsburgh and Houston to open their season.

    • Giants 33 Cowboys 31: When Giants Stadium opened the Cowboys spoiled things by beating the Giants. New York has returned the favor with a thrilling victory in the opening of Cowboys Stadium which included Mario Manningham showing he could be a #1 receiver. Manningham and Steve Smith had ten catches each and the Giants now have two wins and more importantly two wins in the NFC East.

    Making The Call: Forget Brett

The Jets finally finished with Brett Favre this week when they were assessed a fine of $75,000 for not placing him on the injury report last season as required by NFL rules. The only reason this issue ever came to light was Brett Favre decided to tell everyone he was really hurt last season and that was the reason he played so poorly down the stretch.

Jets Try to Back Up Their Words on Field

A Jets beatdown of the Texans, a Patriots escape against the Bills and Rex Ryan's new attitude have the Jets in a chipper mood as they prepare to face the Patriots at home Sunday. Kerry Rhodes, who said the Jets wanted to "embarrass," not simply beat, the Patriots, is especially excited for the game. As if this rivalry needed any more juice.

    • Jets 24 Houston 7: Mark Sanchez had a great NFL debut and Rex Ryan won his first game as Jets coach. Sanchez completed 18-of-31 passes with 1 TD and 1 interception, as he became the first rookie QB to start a game for the Jets in 32 years. As impressive as Sanchez was, the Jets defense deserves a lot of credit. They dominated the Texans’ offense, allowing only 11 first downs and 183 yards on offense.

    Sanchez/Ryan Era Begin for Jets

Who has more pressure? Rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez, who is guaranteed to make $28 million, or rookie head coach Rex Ryan, who's been nothing short of outspoken since taking the job? Probably Sanchez, who has become a bit of a New York icon before playing a regular-season snap. Rookie quarterbacks can succeed in the NFL — just ask Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan — but they more often fall flat on their faces.

Sanchez Named Jets' Opening Day Starter

Clearly sick of wasting press conference time disguising the inevitable, Jets' Head Coach Rex Ryan has reportedly given the starting quarterback job to rookie Mark Sanchez. FoxSports broke the news that Ryan told Sanchez and Kellen Clemens this morning before making the decision official at his next press conference this afternoon. Ryan had said early on in camp that he was hoping to avoid any dragged-out controversy by naming his starter for September 13th's season opener before the third preseason game and apparently stuck with that, despite Sanchez looking like a deer in headlights when he stepped onto the field against the tough Ravens' defense Monday night. The Jets' new coach said he would not hesitate in going into the season with a rookie running the huddle after seeing the success Joe Flacco had last year while Ryan was coaching in Baltimore. Other than Sanchez's flashy first pass, neither he nor Clemens have made a clear case for the job in the two exhibitions. But if there's been any general consensus from local media on the SoCal youngster, it's that it must be difficult to say no to this Sex in Spikes.

Mark Sanchez On His Okay First Start: "I Learned A Lot"

Brand new Jet Mark Sanchez, on the #5 draft pick this year, started his first NFL game last night—a preseason game against the Ravens— and the first moments were ugly. As the NY Times put it, "Early on, Sanchez played at a panic-inducing level. His first pass, short and wobbly after linebacker Ray Lewis knocked him backward, landed in the hands of defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, who rumbled 25 yards into the end zone for a 7-0 lead." (Of course, that was the very defense that Jets coach Rex Ryan helped create as the Raven's former defensive coordinator.) Golden Boy Sanchez did improve as the night went on, but the Jets' other quarterback, Kellen Clemens, did well enough in the 24-23 loss for Ryan to say there was still no decision on who the starting QB would be—the Daily News's QB-meter appears to give a teeny advantage to Sanchez. Sanchez summed up the night, "A great experience. Not the best start on Monday night, but I learned quite a bit."

Sunday Styles Says Studly Sanchez is Second-Coming of Sexy

While Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan is still trying to figure out who will run the huddle come the season opener, Sunday Styles checks in with the real quarterback controversy in town—could Mark Sanchez become the sex symbol that Joe Namath once was in the sixties? The Times says that the Jet rookie is "arguably even better looking" than Broadway Joe. Madison Avenue appears eager to dig its claws into the 22-year-old—how long will it be before he becomes a friend of the mocha frap the way Joe once had an old pal in Ovaltine? But advertisers aren't the only ones who wanna get their paws on the gunslinger who's already done a topless GQ spread and is known to friends as "Dirty Sanchez." The Post says, “Walking sex has a new name. The succulent Sanchez is bona fide cougar bait.” The Times thinks that Sanchez could be in Tom Brady Territory in terms of how his appeal sizes up with the current crop of quarterbacks, adding, "Michael Vick could have had it, but glamour cannot abide dogfighting."

Jets Fans Psyched After Quick Start From 'Purty Sanchez'

Despite the team's 23-20 loss to the Rams last night, Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez stepped onto the field for his first taste of NFL action and showed off an arm that was as red hot as the abs he put on display in GQ a few months ago. In Sanchez's first play from the Jets' 7-yard-line, he coolly tossed a 48-yard completion down the field to David Clowney. Sanchez went 3-for-4 on his only drive, passing for 88 yards and capping it off with a 2-yard touchdown pass. New Head Coach Rex Ryan told reporters after the game that he doesn't think "we're there yet" as far as deciding who will start at QB come opening day. But fans at Giants Stadium sounded like their mind was made up when a sea of newly bought Sanchez jerseys roared for the rookie out of USC when he replaced Kellen Clemens at the end of the first quarter. Clemens didn't help himself out in winning over the Gang Green faithful after a fumble on his third play of the game. Most of the coverage seemed to agree that Sanchez may have assured himself the job with the performance, even if the Daily News worries that the Jets had "a very vanilla game plan" with their rookie due to his unfamiliarity with the offense.

Ever since the Jets got a whiff of former USC quarterback Mark Sanchez at the NFL Scouting Combine, they have certainly been aggressive in doing everything they can to put him in place as the team's next starting QB. After trading up to draft Sanchez fifth in April (and supporting his shirts-off time photo shoot in May), the team wasted little time in getting him signed to a five-year deal that looks to be worth around $50 million ($60M if Sanchez begins building a Jets dynasty with big results). Sanchez is only the second first-rounder to sign and it appears the quick contract paves the way to make the starting job his to lose. The $28 million in guaranteed money is lower than other recent first-round QBs (who have been signing for six years), but it still makes the deal the richest in Jets history.

Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez's photo spread in GQ was released this week, and naturally his teammates couldn't pass up the opportunity to remind of it. The NY Times reports that images from the spread were plastered all over the locker room. "They particularly liked the shot of Sanchez on the beach, the rookie quarterback turned model lifeguard, and they decided to call him David Hasselhoff, a nod to the former 'Baywatch' actor." And tackle Kris Jenkins suggested that Sanchez and Kerry Rhodes do a male model walk-off a la Zoonlander, "We need to determine the prettiest male in this locker room." Even coach Rex Ryan was somewhat approving, "[Sanchez's photos look] much better than most of our guys would. Let’s just be happy it was him and not some of our linemen.” As for his skills on the field, Sanchez was 1 for 4 in practice yesterday.

Jets Rookie Mark Sanchez In GQ Spread

USC quarterback Mark Sanchez made a splash when he was the number 5 NFL draft pick last month—and now he's doing it this month with a photo spread in GQ magazine. The new Jets player is modeling swimwear (not kissing mirrors, the way A-Rod did in Details), though he did say about one pair, "I wouldn’t necessarily be caught in those shorts."

Favre Raises Retirement Doubts As Jets Release Him

Oh Brett Favre, you just couldn't take seeing another quarterback celebrated on the back pages, could you? While the Mark Sanchez to the Jets honeymoon has barely gotten a chance to have its first pregnancy scare, the team announced last night that it's giving "retired" quarterback Brett Favre his full release upon his request. Of course we put retired in quotes because it was less than a year ago that Favre called off his first retirement and ended up coming to the Jets in a trade. The release gives him even more freedom than he had with the Packers a year ago when he had expressed interest in playing for the Vikings—a move Green Bay was not willing to accommodate. Could Favre unretire and head for the Land of 10,000 Lakes? In a statement, the quarterback said that "(GM Mike Tannenbaum and I) have been talking about this for a while. Nothing has changed. At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football." At this time. A source close to Favre told the News that he "wants to keep his options open." At least the release assures that he'll be somebody else's problem.

Jets Holler at Plax Just to See What's Up

You know when you watch a buddy of yours get his life turned upside-down by a psycho girlfriend and then you hear everyone congratulate him on doing the right thing once he finally mans up and tells her to hit the road? But then one night a month later, you realize how lonely you are and can't stop thinking about how how great he'd always said the sex with her was. So you find yourself visiting this chick in rehab, telling her to give you a call if she ever needs a place to crash. No? Well that's what the Jets did a few days ago when GM Mike Tannenbaum placed a call to agent Drew Rosenhaus checking in on the status of Plaxico Burress. When ESPN first reported it, the Jets first gave no comment (caught) and then the GM said, "Consistent with our normal approach of performing our due diligence, we contacted (Rosenhaus) several days ago prior to the draft to inquire about Plaxico's pending legal situation." Welcome to New York, Mark Sanchez!

NFL Draft, Day 2: Jets Keep Trading, Giants Get Another WR

Day two of the 2009 NFL Draft continued much as day one did for the Jets and the Giants. The Jets continued their trading ways by getting the first pick of day two from the Lions and selecting running back Shonn Greene from Iowa. In return for moving up 11 picks, the Jets sent the Lions their original 3rd round pick (76th overall), as well as their 4th (115) and 7th round (228) pick. Greene is a between the tackles type back who, like Mark Sanchez (he made his own "trade" on Sunday for the #6 jersey), is leaving after finishing his junior year. Greene leaves Iowa after an first-team All-American season with school records of 1,850 yards and 20 TDs in a single season. With their 6th round pick (and final pick in 2009), the Jets selected Matthew Slauson, an offensive guard from Nebraska.

Day 1 of the NFL Draft, Highlighted by Sanchez Pick

The Jets got their man by acting boldly, but they may have overpaid at the expense of other areas. New York got to pick Mark Sanchez by making a trade with Cleveland that gave them the #5 pick in the draft. In return, New York sent their first and second round picks and three players, including starter Kenyon Coleman to Cleveland. But, if the Jets are right and Sanchez is a true franchise QB, the trade is worth it. New York just better find someone for him to throw the ball to with their four picks today.

Jets Make Clean Move to Get Sanchez

The Jets got their quarterback to replace Brett Favre. This afternoon, the Jets traded up in the NFL Draft to select Mark Sanchez, the quarterback out of USC. In addition to trading their first two picks (17 and 57 overall) in the 2009 Draft to the Cleveland Browns, the Jets sent the Browns QB Brett Ratliff, DE Kenyon Coleman and S Abram Elam. In the days before the draft, there was lots of buzz around Sanchez, despite starting for only one season at Southern Cal. Sanchez led the Trojans to a 12-1 season including a Rose Bowl win over Penn State where he scored five touchdowns (4 passing, 1 rushing) and threw for 3207 yards, 34 TDs and 10 INTs for the season. With Sanchez, the question for head coach Rex Ryan is, how soon will he give Sanchez the keys to the offense. Prior to the trade, Kellen Clemens was set to battle for the starting job with Brett Ratliff. When asked if he was ready for the New York media, Sanchez said that he would "be alright."
