PATH Train Hits Wall At Herald Square, At Least 10 Injured

A PATH train entering the Herald Square station apparently hit a wall (or bumper). We are hearing that 10 people were injured—8 passengers and 2 PATH employees. Initially, it was reported that there were no delays but now 1010WINS says, " Commuters should expect PATH service delays." Update 8:57 a.m.: NotifyNYC says, "West 33rd Street between 6th Avenue and 7th Avenue is closed to traffic because of emergency vehicle activity." Update 9:56 a.m.: Now MyFoxNY is reporting there were 13 injures, all minor and got amateur video of the response—see it after the jump.

Car Crashes Into Queens Bus Stop, 7 Injured

An apparently "out-of-control" car crashed into a bus stop at Douglaston Parkway and 65th Avenue in Queens. Seven people are injured.

The eerily loud thud that rang throughout Citi Field when David Wright was hit in the helmet by a fastball yesterday afternoon must have sounded like the nail being hammered into the coffin of what has been a season of misfortunes for the Mets. Wright was able to walk off the field on his own accord, but this morning was suffering from post-concussion symptoms despite being released from the hospital this afternoon.

Busted Bret Michaels Shows Off Injuries

Last we heard Bret Michaels had fractured his nose and got three stitches to his bloodied lip (luckily the hair extensions went unscathed). He's denied the Tony Awards accident was his fault, saying he hit his mark, leaving conspiracy theorists to wonder if a Rock of Love reject got behind the wheel of that particular piece of stage scenery. Probably not. But now Michaels continues to draw attention to the blunder, posting photos of his injuries up on MySpace and proving that nothing compliments stitches like a subtle soul patch.

Bullied Student Finally Gets School Transfer After Injury

A 14-year-old honor student tells the NY Post her direct pleas to Schools Chancellor Joel Klein about her safety at her school were ignored—until she was injured. Kimselle Castanos, whose family also repeatedly asked for a transfer, gave Klein a letter detailing how she was "terrorized by a band of teens at the Foreign Language Academy of Global Studies," back in December. He asked her to e-mail him, which the 14-year-old did, sending a total of 25 e-mails (from 12/22: "I am scared about what they are going to do to me") but without reply. Last month, the bullies, who attend a special education school in the same building, found her in the cafeteria: "A girl yanked Kimselle's ponytail so hard she heard a crack in her neck." Kimselle was transferred to the Bronx Leadership Academy; the Department of Education says her family never provided documentation of the threat and that it had been in contact with them. But, Kimselle, who wears a neck brace and whose parents plan to sue, wonders, "I don't understand why it took me getting hurt."

A Massachusetts resident filed a lawsuit against the New York Yankees over injuries he received during a game at Yankee Stadium last year. During the August 29, 2007 game between the Bronx Bombers and Red Sox, Charles Hillios claims that two Yankees fans "harassed" him for cheering for the Red Sox. Though security warned the fans to stop bothering him, per the AP, Hillios says "the fans 'viciously attacked and physically assaulted' him when he went to a concession stand." We doubt this is the first--or last--instance of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry turning vicious. In May, a Yankees fan drove over a Red Sox supporter outside a NH bar.

Early this morning, a fire ripped through a three story building with a store on the ground floor and apartments above. There has been one reported fatality so far, with three people critically injured and four more residents seriously injured. The proprietor of the ground floor deli said two people ran onto his store while on fire. He was able to douse them with water

Three young people--ranging between 16 and 20 years of age--were pulled to safety by FDNY rescuers off a jetty at Coney Island. Four firemen waded and swam out to the end of the jetty, where two women and one man were trapped by a rising tide.

Passover, which begins tomorrow night, never passes by without a surge in emergency room traffic, according to one area physician. Dr. Tucker Woods, chairman at Long Island College Hospital’s emergency department, tells the Post he sees “an uptick in total patient volume during Passover.”

Almost all of the injuries suffered by tenants in Thursday night's high rise fire on the Lower East Side were preventable and the result of panic and poor decision making by residents. In addition to the 30 firefighters who reported injuries fighting the blaze on Grand St., 16 tenants of the 26 story building were injured--two seriously. FDNY officials say that all of the injuries to the tenants could have been avoided.

That was because the best player on the floor took over the game. LeBron ended up with 50 points and 10 rebounds, scoring almost at will when he wanted to. It’s a good thing the Knicks don’t want a player like that.

Eddy Curry had a very nice offensive game, going 9-17 from the field and adding 11 boards. He still doesn’t play any defense and you have to suspect that a healthy Shaq would have done more damage than 20 points, but a win is a win and this one was a big one.

-Brooklyn 3 Staten Island 0: Jacob Ruckle was dominant going eight innings while allowing only four hits and striking out ten as Brooklyn increased their division lead to two games.

Last year, the MTA outlawed walking between train cars, and police beileve a 49 year old woman died doing just that. Glady Julien's family, on the other hand, cannot imagine she would ever do that, since she was a cautious, careful person - and they believe she would only move between cars if she was in danger. The Daily News outlines what happened on April 8:

At 11:23 a.m., the train's emergency brakes were triggered near the 18th St. station in Manhattan. The crew found Julien under the train. Her purse was snagged on an end-car door, a police spokesman said. The train severed one of Julien's arms. Injuries led doctors to amputate another.

The Giants return to the playoffs for the first time since 2003 when they take on the Carolina Panthers Sunday at 1pm. Carolina was a popular pick for the Super Bowl before the season started and looked like they would live up to that billing before late season losses at home to Dallas and Tampa. They still finished 11-5 and will present a formidable challenge to the Giants.

This will be a stern test for the Giants. They have yet to beat a winning team on the road in the Eli Manning era and Saturday they will face a Redskins squad with its’ season on the line and 90,000 hostile fans supporting it. Washington will also be trying to erase the memory of the 36-0 humiliation they suffered at the hands of the Giants in October.

You know its been a tough season when Jets fans look back so fondly to last season's cardiac-inducing AFC Divisional playoff victory over the San Diego Chargers. Remember linebacker Eric Barton's penalty, which could have been the costliest in franchise history? Anyhow, with things looking down but not yet out for the Jets (2-5), a date with a San Diego (4-4) team that looks like last year was no fluke does not seem like an ideal situation, even after a bye week.

Back in March, Gothamist wrote that, “(this edition) of the Yankees should be an improvement over last year’s, especially when you consider the starting pitching.” Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case. High-priced imports, Randy Johnson, Carl Pavano and Jaret Wright have combined for a 15-14 record with an ERA well over 4.50. Wright has not pitched since April and will probably not do so again until August. If you want to find a reason the Yankees are only 46-40, look no further.

3. How many small forwards do you need, anyway?

A rare photo to accompany Gothamist's weekly top 15 rankings. War Eagle indeed. Later this week, we're going to give you a list of places to watch some of the teams on this list. Last week's list and the BCS Rankings are out.
