Jets Try to Back Up Their Words on Field

A Jets beatdown of the Texans, a Patriots escape against the Bills and Rex Ryan's new attitude have the Jets in a chipper mood as they prepare to face the Patriots at home Sunday. Kerry Rhodes, who said the Jets wanted to "embarrass," not simply beat, the Patriots, is especially excited for the game. As if this rivalry needed any more juice.

Eli Manning will be in the same Pro Bowl as his brother Peyton. History is made! (But how does Matt Ryan feel about Eli's inclusion?) The Giants will send six to Hawaii, including both punter Jeff Feagles and placekicker John Carney. Combined age? 86. Their vaunted defense will have only one representative in Justin Tuck. That seems funny. The Giants' stellar offensive line did get some love. Guard Chris Snee will start, and center Shaun O'Hara will be a reserve.

  • Jets 20, Dolphins 14: They didn't make it look easy, but the Jets took down the Dolphins to get the Brett Favre era off to a solid, if not resounding, start. Favre, came out of retirement and got traded to the Jets from Green Bay, threw two touchdown passes. The first, to Jerricho Cotchery, was a well-executed play on both ends. The second, to Chansi Stuckey, was not. On a fourth-down desperation play, Favre simply heaved the ball toward the end zone and was lucky that it was not picked off. Favre then had to watch from the sideline as Miami's Chad Pennington threw for more than 150 yards in the fourth quarter and almost led the game-winning drive throwing to stalwarts such as Anthony Fasano and Greg Camarillo. But then Darrelle Revis intercepted Pennington in the end zone, and the game was over. This week, the Jets play at home against the Patriots, who will be without Tom Brady, who is likely done for the year.
  • Mets 6, Phillies 3: Averting the disaster of a three-game sweep, the Mets salvaged the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader and the finale of a three-game series against the rival Phillies. Thanks in part to Johan Santana's 7 1/3 innings of two-run ball, the Mets now lead them by two games with 19 to play. Carlos Delgado had two homers -- again -- and also singled in two runs in the first. His resurgence has been noteworthy, but this rumblings of his earning consideration for the MVP award is a product over-excitement. How quickly Mets fans forget how much he stunk until June (and how much great Albert Pujols has been). The news was not all good; Billy Wagner could be done for the year.
  • Across the way in Flushing, Serena Williams won her third U.S. Open title by defeating Jelena Jankovic in straight sets. She also took over the No. 1 ranking in the world with an impressive performance in a well-played match. That said, would it kill the women to play a deciding third set once in a while? It hasn't happened since 1995, when Steffi Graf was still roaming the courts.
  • Mariners 5, Yankees 2: Fourth place? Get used to it. The Yankees fell to the lowly Mariners again Sunday, losing two of three in the Pacific Northwest. Mike Mussina stayed stuck on 17 wins after taking the loss. His bid for 20 is the only thing worth following these days.

As admirable as the Jets' effort has been during the second half of their lousy season, don't count on it staying there the final two weeks. Sunday's game against the Titans will mean nothing to them -- though Tennessee needs to win it to have any shot at the playoffs -- and who knows if the Jets will be motivated after their grudge match with the Patriots last week. Their season right now is about watching young players like Darrelle Revis.

What better symbol for the Jets' season than cornerback's Darrelle Revis' collision with safety Abram Elam? Revis, going for an interception against Buffalo's Lee Evans, instead got a mouthful of his teammate and a great view at the Bills receiver's march to the end zone. That score clinched Buffalo's 13-3 win in the Meadowlands on Sunday. The Jets have now lost twice to the Bills and have fallen to 1-7. Their only win came against the Dolphins, but the NFL will still insist that it counts.

Chad Pennington gets all the attention, but the Jets' problems run deeper than the quarterback position. Eric Mangini said as much during an unusually open news conference following the latest Jets debacle, a 38-31 loss at Cincinnati on Sunday. Pennington looked fine in the first half, throwing two touchdowns to Lavaranues Coles. In the second half, the rest of the team's wheels fell off at once. Kenny Watson tore up the Jets' rush defense. When the Bengals did go to the air, Darrelle Revis, the rookie cornerback and a No. 1 draft pick, got called for two pass interference penalties. Nick Manigold, the center, botched a snap. On the last meaningful series, Pennington had an interception returned for a touchdown.

Life's easier the lower you keep everyone's expectations. Bill Waterson once had Calvin impart that wisdom in the comic strip, and the Jets are about to find that out as well. Last year, Coach Eric Mangini worked wonders to get the team into the playoffs and created a situation where media and fans will be looking for more. Don't be surprised if the team doesn't improve upon last year's results.

The Jets and the Giants took very different approaches to the draft on Saturday, but when the day was over, both had primarily upgraded their defenses. Five of the six selections made by the locals were defensive players and both teams hope they addressed some key needs.

What is going on with the Giants? They cut three starters before free agency began and have so far only replaced one, their idiot coach seems to think it is acceptable to compare himself to Hitler and fans may got stuck with paying for PSL's in the new stadium.
