Sonia Sotomayor Sworn In As 111th Supreme Court Justice

This morning, federal judge—and Bronx native with inspiring life storySonia Sotomayor was sworn in to the Supreme Court, making her the first Hispanic and third woman to serve on the nation's highest court. For the Judicial Oath, Sotomayor was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts, while her mother Celina Sotomayor held a bible and her brother Dr. Juan Louis Sotomayor looked on. The Judicial oath has justices promise to "administer justice without respect to persons and do equal right to the poor and to the rich."

Don't Worry: Obama is Definitely Our President

President Barack Obama took the Oath of Office again, joking to reporters, "We decided it was so much fun..." During his swearing-in, Chief Justice John Roberts stumbled over some of the phrasing, prompting some to say Obama wasn't president and that he should re-take the oath.

Showing how divided its philosophies are, Supreme Court justices ruled, 5-4, to limit the power cities have integrating schools and placing students by race. Schools in Louisville, Kentucky and Seattle, Washington had been trying to maintain diversity by, as the NY Times explains, "limiting transfers on the basis of race or using race as a 'tiebreaker' for admission to particular schools." However, the majority found those programs to be unconstitutional and Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in his opinion, “The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race."

And besides, what sells more magazines than one of the world's richest men and his do-gooding wife and an Irish rocker who rocks the sunglasses every chance he can? Managing Editor Jim Kelly explained on the Today show that the selection was to show what people can do in the face of adversity.
