Hotel Chelsea Rain by lensjockey on Flickr What a freakin' mess! A one-two punch of storms will bring heavy rain to the city through tomorrow and likely into Sunday. The rain will make it difficult to play a game tonight at Shea. Conditions are looking only slightly better for tomorrow night. Triple-header Sunday! This morning's rain is from moist air being blown northward from a pseudo-nor'easter-type-storm over South Carolina. The storm remains far away......

Today is the last day to enjoy the current dry spell. The high pressure system that's given the city clear skies is beginning to move away. Before it leaves we should have a sunny and seasonable day with a high in the lower 70s.. Rain looks like it will arrive tomorrow afternoon, ending twelve straight days without precipitation. The rain is courtesy of an extratropical low pressure system that's off the coast of the Carolinas......

How would you like to enjoy two seasons in one week? Well, you don't have much choice if you're in the city for the next few days. Today will be a sunny and mild summer-like day with a high in the low 80s. While Hanna didn't have much impact Saturday night, the swells from the storm will be generating rip currents today. Tomorrow will be a transition day. A strong cold front is approaching and......

The good news about Tropical Storm Hanna: No major damage was reported. The bad new: She dumped "a month's worth of rain within hours"--more than three inches that flooded buildings and highways, delayed flights and put the U.S. Open on pause. The Post has a photograph of a city bus trudging "through the flood waters" and also reports that Ninth Street in Carroll Gardens was "a lake." Northeastern NJ and Long Island got around 6......

So, Tropical Storm Hanna is on her way, and the NYC metro area is making sure it's ready. NYC has activated a "flash flood emergency plan." WNBC reports that workers have been "cleaning catch basins and other areas prone to flooding" and the Office of Emergency Management will be open tomorrow "with more than a dozen city, state and federal agencies starting at 8 a.m." Wind gusts between 45 and 55 mph and 3 to......

Satelllite image of tropical storm Hanna from NOAA September is National Preparedness Month. Are you ready for tropical storm Hanna? While today is an enjoyably warm and sunny September day, tomorrow will be anything but. Today's high should be in the breezy, humid mid-80s. Clouds should arrive this evening and rain should follow, perhaps as early as midnight tonight. If Hanna continues on the predicted path, the city could be in for lots of......

Sunset Streaks by ixtayul on Flickr An entertaining, and possibly very wet, weather situation is developing for today. Normally, synoptic scale cold and warm fronts that stretch for hundreds of miles don't collide with one another. They are just the boundaries between colliding blobs of air. A tired old cold front sits just to the west of the city this morning. Acting alone the front might kick off a few showers as it slowly......

Weather over Manhattan by trawin on Flickr The series of photos above were taken a few minutes apart as a rain storm moved over Manhattan earlier in the week. No such storms today. A high pressure system has brought dry air and a lot of subsidence to the city. The result will be a sunny and mild start to the day with a high right around the normal of 83. That's quite a change......

Saturday's sunset by badison of Flickr The flood advisory and severe thunderstorm warning have both expired. Nearly an inch of rain fell in Central Park, while 1.64 inches soaked LaGuardia this morning. The rain is quickly moving out of the city, but there's a possibility for more storms later this afternoon. This morning's rain, and yesterday afternoon's half-hearted attempt at a storm, are being flung at the city by an upper level low pressure system......

August 6, 2008

There's still a chance of a shower, possibly with heavy rainfall, this morning, but that chance should be gone by early afternoon. The extreme humidity will disappear soon thereafter as the low pressure system bringing the rain moves east of the city, pulling drier air along behind it. The blob of hot air that has brought 12 straight days of 100+ degree weather to Dallas has moved east and will skirt just south of the......

Yesterday's rain may have arrived into the city and surrounding areas late, but it was a furious entrance. Last night, with strong winds and heavy rains, the storm closed roads and caused delays at the airports; some parts of NJ and Long Island lost power. Another 2-4 inches could fall by this evening, so bring your umbrellas. [Thumbnail of photograph taken last night by happyrobot on Flickr]......

Current radar image from the National Weather Service A cold front has been slowly approaching the city since last night. The front is going to take all day and probably all night to move completely through the area. Little waves of low pressure like to surf along the frontal boundary. Those waves are likely to kick off showers and thunderstorms from now until tomorrow night. Given how thick the air is with moisture, some of......

Do you know what yesterday, today and tomorrow have in common? Statistically speaking, they are the hottest days of the year, averaging 85 for a high and 70 for a low. In that sense the recent hot spell peaked just about on time. Although the heat advisory is still in effect, today shouldn't be as warm as the weekend as the temperature will probably top out around 90. There's a slight chance of showers and......

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m.. Not only could rain come, but WCBS 2 mentions that "hail up to to 2 inches in diameter, with thunderstorm wind gusts to 70 mph and dangerous lightning are possible in parts of the tri-state" area. And that's on top of the heat advisory! So those umbrellas you're using to shade yourself from the sun may need to be do double duty!......

northwesterly | chinatown by naftels on Flickr Like many of us the atmosphere slows down in the summer. A good example of that slowness is the approaching cold front that is kicking off this morning's rain. It has taken nearly a day to travel from Central New York to the northwestern suburbs of the city. The front will take another couple of hours to move through the city so the showers may stick around......

Liberty Sunset by Danny L. at Flickr Lots of weather action is in store for today. First, there's a chance of showers for the remainder of the morning. The showers are the remains of storms that formed last night over Pennsylvania. The clouds from those storms will keep today cooler than originally anticipated. Expect a high in the mid 80s. This afternoon's rain is almost a certainty as Gothamist forgot to bring an umbrella......

Sunset over Erie Basin by Danny L on Flickr Independence Day is turning out humid and gray. There will be an occasional light shower this afternoon and a pretty good chance for showers or thunderstorms this evening. You can probably make it through the Feelies/Sonic Youth show without getting too wet, but it would be a good idea to bring an umbrella if you're going to see the fireworks this evening. Humid and gray......

This week's weather forecasts haven't been too accurate, but we'll try again. It now appears that the weekend will be hazy, hot and humid with a chance of showers or thunderstorms each day through Sunday. Showers are already popping up around the metro area this morning. Later in the day those showers may contain heavy downpours. This afternoon's high will be in the sticky upper 80s. A warm and muggy air mass contains a high......

Empire State Building with Rainbow by Gothamist at Flickr There is no meteorological definition for thick air but Gothamist thinks today would qualify. So far it has been a cloudy, foggy, misty, muggy and rainy day. Throw in a shower or thunderstorm this afternoon and we've got a summer soup! The thunderstorms could be severe. Hail, damaging winds, heavy rain and frequent lightning are possible through about 10 p.m. or so. A flash flood watch......

Awesome shot of the Brooklyn Bridge and Lower Manhattan from clubsodaNY on Flickr Though it may rain this afternoon today promises to be less gloomy than yesterday. Less than half an inch of rain was measured at Belvedere Castle, though it sure seemed like more fell. Today there should be plenty of sun in the morning. Clouds will begin to build around noon and there's a chance for showers and thundershowers through the evening......

The month of May is remaining stubbornly cool. While the first four months of the year were all warmer than average, this month is running nearly two degrees below normal. This week will keep the month on its cool streak. The normal high for today is 72. The mix of wind, clouds, sun and possibly a shower this afternoon will keep the maximum for today to the mid-60s at best. That's nowhere near the record......

Sometimes the atmosphere gets stuck in a rut. The typical size and speed of high and low pressure systems means they should pass through the northeastern U.S. every few days. The pattern would rarely be noticed should it rain every five days as that would mean rain today, next Wednesday and the Monday after that. But when the repeat button is set for every seven days and the rainy days turn out to be Friday......

If it were happening in March today's nor'easter would be shutting the city down. Alas it is May and twenty degrees too warm. Instead of a snow day lazily spent at home we have to contend with wind, rain and flooding. Drat! Judging from the radar map, there's a band of heavy showers about to skim the city from the southeast. Once that passes the rain will start to diminish and by later this afternoon......

Today would be an excellent day to have lunch delivered. The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch through this evening. An inch of rain is expected to fall today, with locally higher amounts possible. The rain should fall over a several-hour period so we don't anticipate any widespread subway stoppages. Temperatures will hold steady in the mid-50s or even drop slowly during the day. Throw in a gusty easterly wind and you have......

Black Mirror by Patrick57 on Flickr Ah, rain. After a two-week dry spell, punctured by a few drops over the weekend, the city is finally getting a good soaking. This comes as welcome relief for anyone suffering from tree pollen allergies. The rain is also a relief for those of us who climb the stairs in Morningside Park every day as the urine stench was getting to be a bit much. The rain should last......

Narcissus by Pabo76 on Flickr Because of the old "April showers bring May flowers" line, April has a reputation for being a rainy month. That may be true where that rhyme originated, but April is only the fifth rainiest month in New York. This April has seen less than half its normal rainfall and no precipitation in the last two weeks. That dry spell is about to end, possibly as soon as late tonight.......

Today's weather word is rain. The chance of rain will start increasing in the mid-afternoon. The city should see a steady rain beginning this evening and lasting until tomorrow morning. While you may not need an umbrella on a day like today, if rainy days often leave you fumbling as you multitask -- there may be a solution: this new umbrella from the future! Spring Central Park Sunset by AMARTI02 on Flickr A pleasant day is in store for today and tomorrow, with a brief interruption in between. A gentle southerly breeze and a day of sun should warm the city up to near 60 degrees this afternoon. A decaying cold front arrives tonight and brings with it a slight chance of rain. The rain, if it even happens, shouldn't occur until after tonight's game at Shea. Clouds......

While the city is between rainfalls this morning, Gothamist would like to issue several reminders:First, the sidewalks of New York are not the beach. Please do not use your six-foot wide beach umbrellas in the rain. Second, though it pains shy New Yorkers to make eye contact, please do watch where you are going while using your umbrella. Third, your outerwear and preciously coiffed head will survive thirty seconds of rainfall. Please do not stop......
