McCain Makes It Official in New York

2007_02_mccainletter.jpgYesterday, Arizona Senator John McCain announced he was running for president in 2008. It was shocking only because we thought that was a given all this time. McCain revealed the news on the Late Show with David Letterman, and said he'd give a formal speech in April to explain that. Any opportunity to stump, we suppose!

McCain also appeared at the Irish-American 10th Annual Awards last night, where former Governor George Pataki introduced him. The NY Sun called Pataki's visit a "surprise" and "an interesting twist". While there's no love lost between Pataki and Rudy Giuliani, who supported Mario Cuomo for governor, Pataki "backed President Bush in 2000 and attempted to knock Mr. McCain off the New York ballot." Well, we have two words that can explain all of that: Cabinet position.

The Sun also reports that McCain was supposed to visit Lower Manhattan, but had to cancel because of travel issues. Well, this can only be good news for souvenir vendors, as Ground Zero will get a lot of foot traffic during the presidential race.

A recent Quinnipiac poll showed that Rudy Giuliani edges out McCain amongst Republican voters. Conservative website Townhall.com has an article by Dick Morris and Eileen McGann about McCain's poor chances, especially with Rudy in the picture.
