Microsoft Vista Is So Off the Wall

2007_01_vistalaunch1.jpg

It's a new step in outdoor advertising: Have a big billboard, then wire dancers to get all Microsofty over it! We heard that there would be a special billboard today outside the Terminal Building on 11th Ave between 27th and 28th Streets, but we didn't know it was going to be this...well, Cirque du Soleil.

2007_01_vistalaunch2.jpg

The sixteen dancers were charged to "move across the exterior walls...to form the images of the Windows Vista and Windows Office icons." We can't wait to see how John Hodgman will respond!

Reader Sacha sent us these photographs and told us that at the end of the performance, three dancers went to hail a cab. Which they got.

Windows Vista goes on sale at midnight tonight. We can't imagine anyone waiting at midnight for Vista - it's no World of Warcraft! And Bill Gates is giving a webcast about Vista at 4:45PM EST.

what is wrong with you shills, the new MS operating system stinks! its just more DRM to lock you in and strip your privacy. anyone who knows anything about computers is not that excited about this dumb 'upgrade' (used very loosely). dont give in to the hype! are you guys being paid for this? this is the 2nd gawker blog i saw pimping this lame duck (consumerist being the other).

Well, we did extensively cover the opening of the Apple Store.

When did gothamist become a gawker blog? Someone should get their facts straight before making accusations. Plus, the story is about the PR stunt, not the OS.

I'll be waiting for the bugs to be worked out on this one. XP works more than well enough for me now. Vista looks pretty like OSX, without having the unintuitive frustrating interface of the Mac OS. Upgrades are in the future for me but I'm set for right now.

Anyone who actually finds the MacOS interface "frustrating" or "unintuitive," especially when compared to anything Microsoft offers, is likely retarded. Wow.

Somehow I think calling people retarded just because they find MacOS "frustrating" and "unintuitive" is not helping things. Let's just say he's OS-impaired.

Let's leave the stupid Windows/Mac/Linux/BSD/Solaris discussion to the people on Slashdot.

No matter how 1337 you OS is, you shouldn't be a dick.

I second on the opinion that Vista is piece of crap full of DRMs. Why in the world would I spend my hard eared money on this downgrade, preventing me from listening/watching my legally purchased software and basically being the defacto arm of the music/movie industry. Ugh. I'm keeping XP for as long as I can.

I've no use for euphemisms, Eunice. Retarded he is.

LOL. I am old enough to remember when the first Apple Computer came out, followed by the first PC, and then the Mac. As it turned out, all those computers were good (for their era), but all were simply stepping stones to the next platform (or upgrade). Nothing new about a new OS being released. ESPECIALLY not new is the predictable belly-aching by Mac-Aficionados. Does anybody expect them to say anything positive or concede anything? Not if you've been listening to their belly-aching for the past two decades. Alas, copy-cat flaws and all, Windows commands 95%+ of the market and will continue to do so. So let us leave the belly-archers to have their fun and do what they enjoy best (belly-ache). The rest of us, back to work. Thanks to Gothamist for the story on the Vista PR stunt. Oh yeah, thanks to Apple for those very cool Mac TV ads.

That's a nifty ad.

Aw, Hernan knows it all. He can say LOL and use belly-ache (and arche[!?]) as a verb. I'm not "belly-ach[ing]," Hernan, as I give approximately 1/345,352,628,627th of a fecal unit about what kind of computer anyone uses. I just found Ben's comment quite ridiculous, so I replied to it. Your tone reminds me of that of republicans circa 2005. It's quite a tone indeed.

Ah, launch day. Be glad it's just dancers on the side of a building. When XP came out, they hired sailboats with the logo on the sails to line up along the 520 bridge in Seattle -- the bridge everyone who lives in Seattle drives across to go to Microsoft.

Since people in Seattle come to a complete halt on the bridge because of a wave, a sunny day, a rainy day, a day they can see Mt. rainier, a day they can't see Mt. Rainier, a seagull flying too close to the water - this caused a traffic jam and caused everyone heading to Microsoft to be late for work... because of the launch of a Microsoft project.

corporate sellout who worked for msft and did very well doing so, thanks

@the retard, laura, & (somewhat) hernan:

haha

As for the republican thing, cool yr jets he has a point, retract the claws, callin someone retard is quite diffrent than callin someone a republican.

@the article:

bill gates should be dismembered and auctioned on ebay by 'cirque' clowns (or whatever)...yea an immature idea, but at least it furthers our economy, and its not healthy for one man to have so much of our money...it makes me uneasy.

did anyone get a video of it? i'm stuck on the west coast.

I agree with Laura - buy a Mac. Most people are incompetent on computers and dumb in general. You're better off buying something simplistic like a Mac.

Just for the record--the aerial show was NOT Cirque du Soleil. The name of the company was GROUNDED Aerial. Choreographer, Karen Fuhrman.

I wouldn't call Macs counter-intuitive but I will say this. I've been a windows user all of my life and have gotten pretty darn good at using it. Well, one day not too long ago I got the chance to use my friend's Macbook and initially I was helpless. It was really frustrating having to hold down control (or apple key, I don't recall which) and then click instead of simply right-clicking. Eventually I figured out the Mac-equivalents of windows features, but it took a while.

Hello,

I was just browsing through various Vista related blogs and cought this great post. I was wondering where exactly this stunt took place. I think it's a great advertising strategy. It may be a little over the top but with the money that company has, I guess they have some to throw to the wind.

I have a blog, download-microsoft-vista(dot)com and I was wondering If I could post a link to this post with a little blurb about it. I don't want to get into any trouble with you, I just want to entertain my readers :)

Please let me know if that's okay.

BTW, whats with the first comment...a little over zealous and angry if you ask me. With all my research of all the problems Vista has, I could tlak like him but would rather keep my mouth shut for at least 6 months :)

Thanks,

George
