NYC Transit Will Add More L and G Service

Are pigs flying? Has hell frozen over? am New York finds some glorious information buried in the MTA's 2007 budget: The MTA will be adding service improvements to the L and G lines.
Starting next spring, New York City Transit will run more trains on the overcrowded L during both peak and off-peak hours. Then in 2008, the G train -- long called the "step child" of the MTA -- will begin running south to five more Brooklyn stops. That's the MTA - about two years behind schedule. Better late than never, at least. It was only this past summer that the MTA admitted the L train was too crowded, with its ridership practically doubling in ten years. NYC Transit spokesman Charlie Seaton said, "It was the unforeseen explosion in population of the Williamsburg-Greenpoint corridor and the resulting increase in train ridership." We bet a bunch of real estate brokers are rejoicing and updating their sell materials."That's terrific," said Assemb. Joe Lentol (D-Brooklyn), who has long said his Greenpoint and Williamsburg district needs more subway service.
"They finally found this area is developing and I'm happy they caught up to the times."
It's unclear whether the service improvements will also include making sure trains and stations don't always smell like sewage - here's the Save the G website.

yay! G train!
maybe i can actually take it late at night now.
*maybe i can actually take it late at night now.*
sadly, not till 2008.
Dogs lying down with cats!
seriously, extending G service further in to brooklyn should have been a no-brainer long before now. and i have been taking the G to and from work for about 18 months now - it's surprisingly crowded. maybe they'll upgrade to 6 cars someday.

Not only is it not going live until '08 but they're likely to shut down the Very Useful extension of the G to Chuch Street in '09. When the MTA says "might" about service cuts, they mean, "keep it greasy because its going down".
Funny. I had this story six days ago. Nothing like late-breaking news from amNew York.
Yes! Me and my hipster buddies are stroking our ironic mustaches in rejoice. Now we can pack even more of our friends onto the L so we can spill our PBR over the hardworking Mexican immigrants coming in from Canarsie.
Good times.
What about the damn info boards on the L? When are they happening?
thanks, annnuhrrrlll.
I was waiting for the (enter hipster joke here) response.
Wow. It took 8 posts before someone made a hipster joke. Slow Tuesday, guys.
How about improving the C now? Seriously, they run like 4 A express trains per every C local.
Finally... The L train breakdancers & performers can now break-dance with more room without having to worry about knocking the shit out of a straphanger.
Thanks MTA
I don't understand why we have to wait at least a year to take the G to Church St., when the G is already going there in order to turn around.
It doesn't take a very large brain to figure out that the MTA is just staggering these "service improvements." Don't give us too much at once, jerks, or we might expect decent service all of the time.
(I don't understand why we have to wait at least a year to take the G to Church St., when the G is already going there in order to turn around.)
The MTA wants to replace the 1930-installed switches at Church Avenue before using them for revenue service.
Let's ride that G to Church. There are a limited number of cars, and if the service isn't used when its there, the cars will go back where they came from.
save the money, seal off the east river tunnel, gas billyburg and do away with all the hipster scum for good.
That's good news, There going to extend the "G"line to Church Avenue . It's about time the MTA did somwthing worthwhile . They really need to change the markers on the current terminal at Smith-9.Sts so that the "G" stop at the rear of the platform where the exit is . It would be nice if they ran some limited"F" service over those express tracks there upgrading when this extenision of the "G" goes into effect . The MTA is the "Caveman" Of the [21]st century .
Half of the G line doesn't work (it never serves Queens). Is the MTA going to do anything about that?
If the guy in that picture can afford to buy a Mark II then he can afford to hail a cab.

It would be really nice if the MTA would have regular G service into Queens. Getting from Queens to Brooklyn is a pain in the butt! The line's there, guys! Just keep it running!
