Rudy, Denial is a River in Egypt

2006_11_giulianikean.jpg

If you were wondering how former mayor Rudy Giuliani feels after the thumpin' the Republicans took last week, wonder no more, because he's been facing it with the same, stubborn Rudy-vision that we all remember from his NYC mayoral years. The NY Times was on the scenefor a speech Giuliani made:

In his first public comments about last week’s Democratic sweep of Congress, Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former Republican mayor of New York City, who is a possible 2008 presidential candidate, said on Sunday that he did not view the election as a major rebuke to his party. But he said that Republicans “have to go back to your principles in figuring out how you react to something like this.”

Mr. Giuliani’s comments came at a news conference at Wilkes University, where he delivered the keynote address at a leadership conference sponsored by the university’s Jay S. Sidhu School of Business and Leadership.

“I don’t see this election, anymore than the one two years ago or the one four years ago, as a defining election,” said Mr. Giuliani, who stumped for some two dozen Republican Congressional candidates during the campaign.

Most of them lost in a nationwide wave of defeats that put Democrats in control of both the House and the Senate.

There's that Rudymism! We're uncertain where he's been taking the nation's temperature, but if he wants to run for President, maybe he'll take the blinders off.

In other political news:
- The New Yorker on the city's election night parties: Meanwhile, in Harlem, Representative Charles Rangel’s party, at the seafood restaurant Pier 2110, was turning out to be the night’s hot ticket. Early on, a couple of City Council workers had complained about being stuck there. “We’re like seat fillers at the Oscars,” one said. But, as word got out about the generous spread (champagne, sushi), people began flocking uptown.
- While answering MTA-related questions from the Daily News, Eliot Spitzer claims that MTA subway and bus fare hikes in 2008 would be a "last resort" - and the photo accompanying the article is of a shirtless Spitzer on the beach in Puerto Rico!

Spitzer should stay out of the sun!

rudy is a typical republican -- completely out of touch with reality!

I hope the Governor elect is wearing SPF 45.

And Rudy's remarks seemed way out of touch with reality. Maybe he didn't want to admit that his campaigning didn't help that much.

Gothamist's analysis seems to be what is out of touch with reality and is devoid of credible political commentary. Gothamist's skewed biases are much worse than anything Rudy said (which was really innocuous by the way.).

holy crap! spitzer is SO pale.

"Most of them lost in a nationwide wave of defeats that put Democrats in control of both the House and the Senate."

Hmmm, Could it be Rudy's Appearance hurt the candidates??

IMO, Rudy's remarks often seems out of touch wih reality.

i hope that rudy does run for president in '08. it will ensure a democratic victory in that election.

This election was hardly as momentous as the 1994 election that threw the Democrats out after 40 years.

Yeah, okay. The mid-terms meant nothing.

You right-wingers keep up that mantra and we'll see how far you go in '08.

Why is anyone that doesn't 100% agree with have to be a rightwinger? Ironically, you and Dick Cheney have something in common.

Umm... frankly what he said was exactly right. The Republicans DO have to go back to their principles and they DO have to figure out how to react to this. They're supposed to be the party of less government, balanced budgets, and scaled back social programs. That's what they won on in 1994. They lost this since they went all wack-o religious and big-brother-esque since 2002.

But hey, the democrats certainly aren't into waste. I'm sure our tax dollars didn't go into funding Rangel's "Generous spread."

And if you really believe that, Republicans aren't the only ones with party blinders on. Rudy is maybe the only Republican on the planet that has a shot at carrying New York. Add that to the standard Republican states and you have yourself an electoral college win.

First off, would everyone quit using the "Ummm" ... we know you think you're so above it all, but it's beyond annoying.

Mid terms. Two-term presidents get a message from voters in a predictable manner:

Ronald Reagan's party got trounced.
Bill Clinton's party got trounced.
Now George Bush's party got it.

Where's the mystery, folks.

Look out, JAK. Anonymass, iggy, and toby are getting ready to brand you a neocon for such blasphemy.

ugh, politicians and their American flag pin.
Yes, we get it, you love America more than me because you have one and I don't.

Ummmmmmm..... nope, i like it.

Same old Rudy. He was a class-A prick when he was the Mayor, He's still a class-A prick now ! The only difference would be now he's a world class prick of the Grade-A type . The people that supported this war have finally begun to see this for what it really is . The elephants lost the race, As well as the control . Deal with it like grownup's bunch of blubbering bitches !

The 9/11 Whore strikes again.

The true lesson of the election is that people may be starting to rightly reject these guys who are so sure they're right about everything.

And while he would be a formidable candidate, it's hardly a given that the Whore would carry New York. After all, we know him best and many remember the pre-9/11 Rudy, whose answer to law and order was fire two great police commissioners (Kelly and Bratton) and start beating up black folks (Louima and Dorismond).

Come on, Rudy, even the Commander-Incompetent sees the light. What are you smokin'?

I gladly voted against this nasty fraudulent prick twice and will gladly vote against him again.

Rudy's "mug" is already on a warning label as part of the Warning Labels On Politicians™ campaign. The Warning Labels On Politicians™ campaign is a public service effort aimed at giving people the same type of warnings about politicians that they currently receive about other harmful things in life, such as drugs, tobacco, pesticides, etc. To learn more, type "Warning Labels On Politicians" in a Google search.

LOL!!! Rudy talking about principles! Which ones, Rudy? Marrying your cousin, then dumping her when Donna Hanover comes along... and swearing to the Cardinal that you had no idea that you were cousins?
Dumping her, the mother of your children, on television... on Mother's Day? Carrying on an affair, while you were still married, with a married woman, while screaming in moral indignation about President Clinton's philandering? How about putting favors to donors first when you personally approved the radios that kept firefighters and cops from being able to talk to each other... and lead to the needless deaths of many of those men on 9-11.

This could go on... but I'll stop at that last one. That alone should have put him behind bars, not onto anyone's list of "heroes".
