Subway Art, as Coffee Table Book

2006_11_artstransit.jpgWe're adding this to our holiday wish list: The MTA has published a book about the art in the subways, Along The Way: MTA Arts For Transit. From the description:

Initiated in 1985, this collection of site-specific public art now encompasses more than 150 pieces in mosaic, terra-cotta, bronze, faceted glass, and mixed media. The program takes its cue from the original mandate that the subways be "designed, constructed, and maintained with a view to the beauty of their appearance, as well as to their efficiency." Arts for Transit is committed to the preservation and restoration of the original ornament of the system and to commissioning new works that will exemplify the principles of public art, relating directly to the places in which they are installed and the community around them.

Introduction by noted actor Stanley Tucci, who has been riding the New York City subways for the past thirty-five years.

Arts for Transit director Sandra Bloodworth tells NY Sun, "Artwork in the subways is on par with any first-rate museum." And in the book, the art is arranged by subway line, naturally. Learn more about art in the subways at MTA: Arts for Transit.

And speaking of the MTA, the NY Times suggests that former city DOT commissioner Elliot G. Sander is a top candidate to replace Chairman Peter Kalikow. The only thing is that Kalikow is unlikely to step down, especially now that an offer for the Ferrari fiend to lead the Real Estate Board of NY is gone.

There was a fantastic exhibit at a building gallery in midtown (I think the UBS Building) with all the artwork from this book...really fun!
