Someone Stole George Washington's Head!

2006_11_headless.jpg

Gothamist reader Seth wrote in on Sunday:

A friend of mine was at St. John the Divine today. She was walking along with a tour when they got to the section with the busts of famous Americans. She looked over, and one bust was missing. In its place was a dollar bill. The missing head: George Washington. The tour guide was freaked out. Security was notified. Apparently this happened between yesterday afternoon and this afternoon.

Today, he went back and got pictures. Who could have committed this dastardly crime? Our money is on Al Qaeda.

WTF? Here's the link (again): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pc9y5ayeeb4

What is that, a green turd?

My guess is Bart Simpson.

In the episode The Telltale Head, Bart Simpson stole Jebediah Springfield's head. I second #6's opinion. :-)

Bart Simpson was my first guess too, funny. Or Butters trying to copy Bart.(SouthPark)

I knew it!.

I've been saying, "Washington's lost its head" for awhile now.

Clearly, one of the pigs from animal farm...

...and by that I mean Dick Cheney or Tom DeLay

Well, I'm all for a separation of church and state. Take down the rest of the statue.

This was an offensive, criminal act. (I assume that offending/shocking was partly the motive.) If there is a political basis for attacking a public symbol of an historical figure, there are many methods of protest which might elicit sympathy to one's point of view. However, iconclasm is a mute, victimising act. It's a brutal form of suggestion, signifying mainly the intent to harm. What else was this person trying to express? I'm curious, but I doubt that the answer could be very satisfying.
Perhaps this was more in the way of a prank, and leaving the dollar-bill head in place of the sculpted head was meant to be taken for an act of wit. If so, poetic justice would have the prankster caught and treated with like humor. (Not my idea of justice, but it flows from the act.)

I quess America will be in default soon.

I guess Anerica will be in default soon. Or dollar is going to collapse. This is something like an omen. I heard this Washington's face is pictured on one-dollar bill.

By the way, the latest 10-dollar bill has a lot of red color, torch and inscription "WE THE PEOPLE". For whom are this signs? For those people it may concern? Dollar had never contained red color yet.
