Coming Soon: Anime Roosevelt Island!

2006_08_ri2.jpg

Dan Dickinson let us know some interesting news from the world of anime. An upcoming Japanese anime series, RED GARDEN, will be set on Roosevelt Island. Apparently it's about kids who go to a high school on Roosevelt Island - and we guess hijinks will occur (we have a very poor understanding of Katakana - if someone who knows Japanese better wants to translate, we'd love that) - maybe they will involve stuck trams. As far as we knew, there is no real high school on Roosevelt Island - just PS/IS 217 which goes through the 8th grade (Roosevelt Island high schoolers go to Manhattan or Queens).

Anyway, the concept drawings are pretty cool - we can't wait to see how the actual animation looks!

And Dark Water, the Roosevelt Island horror film, was based on a Japanese film - maybe that's a connection to Red Garden?

There is a private special ed school on Roosevelt Island that includes the lower grades, middle school and a high school. The Red Garden site that you link to is in Japanese.

It's a perfect match. Roosevelt Island is a classic post-war utopia/dystopia. Every square inch of the island is "done" and landscaped to the nth degree.

Like Singapore it's fascinating, futuristic and frightening.

The last drawing had the 2nd smaller bridge to the North going the wrong way; it should be going the other way to Queens.

the Queensboro bridge goes from manhattan to queens, over roosevelt island.

I'm a little rusty, but I just read the outline. I think it says,

New York. Girls brought together by cruel fate. The tribulations of [the age of] 17. The clash of values. But beware the overflowing of kind words.

Kate, Rose, Rachael and Claire go to the same school. One day, the same day they're told of a classmate's sudden death, they're all struck by a strange feeling. That night near sundown, in the midst of their sadness, they're guided to gather in the warehouse district(?).

These girls who had nothing in common, they all feel the same strange sensation, none has any memory of the previous night. They hear footsteps approach, and a mysterious boy and girl appear.

The girl says an unbelievable truth,
"You all have died."

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, the Queensboro Bridge does go over Roosevelt Island. I was talking about the smaller bridge on the right (North) side of the picture. The Roosevelt Island Bridge connects to Astoria (not Manhattan) at 36th Avenue.

Very interesting and professional site! Good luck! nokia6630

I have seen the first two episodes of this anime and it is very well done. It is a horror and mystery anime with lots of drama and a song every episode (like a musical). The visual style of it is quite impressive. There are fan-subtitled episodes of this anime available for free until it gets licensed in the USA, you can find some at http://www.rpguru.com if you search for "Red Garden."
