Teen's Night of NYC Clubbing Ends in NJ Dumpster

Yesterday, police arrested a man suspected of killing 18 year old NJ resident, Jennifer Moore. Moore had been missing since Tuesday morning, but calls still were being made from her cellphone. Police questioned those being called and were led to Draymond Coleman, who was at an SRO in upper Manhattan. After questioning Coleman, the police found Moore's body in a dumpster in West New York, NJ, and the crime scene in a Weehawken, NJ motel nearby - the Park Avenue Hotel, which the Daily News describes as squalid. A tape from the motel showed Coleman and Moore entering the motel, and police say Coleman beat and strangled Moore, stuffed Moore's body into a duffel bag for disposal. It seems that Coleman also tried to remove his DNA evidence from her, by clipping her nails and swabbing her body with alcohol. Police believe Moore put up a fight; the Bergen Record writes, "The scene inside the room was so gruesome, [a detective] said, that he passed on viewing the body." Coleman will be extradited to NJ. His prior record includes a drug selling offense.
Moore had been missing since Tuesday morning. A night of clubbing and drinking with her 18 year old friend, Tara Keenan, ended at the NYPD impound lot at Pier 76, with the two girls trying to get Keenan's car released. From the NY Times:
But tow lot attendants refused to give Ms. Keenan the car because she appeared to be intoxicated, the police said. Ms. Keenan then passed out, collapsing, and the attendants called for an ambulance. The lot workers also called officers to the scene because another apparently inebriated woman, who was not with Ms. Moore and Ms. Keenan, was there trying to retrieve her car and was becoming ill, the authorities said.An impound attendant tells the Daily News that Moore "was toasted. The state she was in, anybody could have taken advantage of her." The attendant added that Keenan only realized that Moore was missing when she was in the ambulance and tried calling her. Moore's last call was to her boyfriend and she said there was a guy following her. The NY Times has a map of Moore's last hours and the Daily News has a timeline.Ms. Moore went to use the tow lot’s bathroom. About 3 a.m., just before the ambulance arrived and with officers there attending to the two ill women, Ms. Moore apparently left the bathroom, slipped by all the authorities and simply walked off unnoticed, the police said.
Guest House, the West 27th Street club where Moore and Keenan were last partying, is cooperating with authorities; though it's unclear how the two underage girls got in, the club may not be fined for serving someone under 21, because the drinks were purchased by an adult. The NY Times has an article about the dangers of partying in the city - especially alone and especially when alcohol is involved. While there are comments about kids from NJ or Connecticut or Long Island coming to the city and not knowing what they're getting in for, what bothers us much, much more is that teens everywhere are just trying to emulate their favorite underage celebrities who go clubbing while dressed provocatively. A commenter just made a good point about self-restraint being needed as well - we agree wholeheartedly.
The police were fortunate to find Coleman through the cell phone use. What's sad is that there have been no leads or breaks like that in case of Chanel Petro-Nixon, a Brooklyn teen who disappeared while walking in Brooklyn on a Sunday afternoon (to go apply for a job) and whose body was found days later. Her family and the community are trying desperately to find people who know something.

it's not that they (or we) are trying to emulate our celebrities, if that were the case we'd all be in rehab or anorexic, it's that we really just like flaunting what we got, but we live in a world where that gets people killed sometimes, so maybe we can all take a lesson in self restraint.
As the father of a female I have to say this first, to anyone of age who might be reading this:
If you get in trouble CALL HOME! Or call someone and MAKE THEM COME AND PICK YOU UP!!! Your parents may be mad but they don't want to see you dead!!!
I've had to go down to the West Side Impound to get people a couple of times, and I've had to call people to get me a couple of times. It's worth the chop-busting you'll get from your family or friend. Please.
At first I couldn't believe the folks at the tow pound would let this girl wander out into such unfamiliar territory, but now it seems like she wandered out on her own. Bad, bad mistake. Folks, the city is safer now than it's been in decades, but that doesn't make it safe. There are still bad guys in the city. That seems screamingly obvious but I guess it bears repeating. There may be less of them, and they may be less crack-addled than they were in the 80's, but they're still out there.
Having said that, this is no one's fault but the bastard that killed her. But it is fair to say that moving through the city is a skill that has to be learned. Unfortunately it seems that poor Jennifer didn't have that in her skill set, and now she'll never have the chance to learn it.
Just such a friggin' shame...
Nice Gothamist headline. Good think you managed to work in the dumpster angle.
knew it. Black guy.
he be charged with a Federal Crime because he crossed state lines with this women. He should also have his cock cut off.
There are rumors this guy is a pimp. His girlfriend, a part-time prostitute, is also being questioned as an accessory/acomplice.
Nice Gothamist headline. Good thing you managed to work in the dumpster angle.
The link to the Chanel Petro-Nixon story at the end of the post is broken. Please fix it; someone, somehwere might have information. and ko, who posted above, I hope it's a white man that puts you in a duffel bag after reenacting scenes from Deliverance. Log off.
Sorry, but did you just blame this on HOW SHE WAS DRESSED? Didn't I see this on an episode of oh, I don't know, every TV drama about rape ever made. The first thing the victim's lawyer does is ask her what she was wearing because they know it's going to come up in court. Do you honestly believe that if she were wasted and stumbling around a tow yard at 3am in a turtleneck this wouldn't have happened? I think it has a little more to do with the fact that the men who raped and beat her to death WERE FUCKING PSYCHOS. Period. No one deserves what she got and, let's face it, who among us didn't take stupid risks when we were kids? There were no Tara Reids in my day (thank God) and I was doing the same stupid shit this poor girl was up to. Everyone needs to learn to party safely, no doubt, but unfortunately some people are going to either slip up or just end up in the wrong place at the wrong time. So don't blame Hollywood and, for God's sake, do NOT blame the victim. To read such an implication from Gothamist is disappointing to say the least.
I am wondering if they need a NYPD officer on duty at the impound lot and a drunk tank there, since you would expect that a lot of drunks would show up to get their vehicles after a night of drinking.
And I hate to sound insensitive, but if you are going into Manhattan from the burbs for a night of drinking and clubbing, take public transportation into the city.
SOMETHING does not make sense. She calls her boyfriend saying that she is being followed by some creep AND then gets in a cab with him? And is later seen walking into the hotel with him willfully. Does anyone think that ROOFIES were involved considering the aforementioned and the fact her girlfriend went unconscious?
Draymond??? Guilty!!!
knew it. Black guy.

ko, I think you missed the bigger picture. It was a "GUY" that was the predator and killed her.
You all subscribed to the same school of thought. men. MAN. MALE.
PATH is right, something isn't quite right with the official story. If she was afraid of someone following her and was sober enough to be that perceptive, why the hell would she get into a cab with a stranger and then follow him into a seedy looking motel??? And what about the cab driver, if she was forced into it or forced out, wouldn't he have noticed something???
The simplest answer is usually the right one, but there's some kind of funny business going on here...
Good thing she's a beauty, otherwise the Post might have lead with *snicker* the crisis in the mid east.
What editor at the Post has such a chub-on for young women? Does every story need to include the word 'beauty'? First it was the "Beauty blown away" in the building explosion, now it's the "teen beauty's horror murder".
If she was ugly, would the story not be news?
Chris, it's sad, but The Post's job to sell papers, not report the news objectively. The truth is that if she were ugly or obese, it would not have been a story.
Guy: I agree. I don't know how accurate the today’s Daily News is, however, the article on page 2 stated that the female NYPD impound clerk said that Moore was very quiet. The only thing that she, Moore, said was “could I use the rest room.” We don't know what she did in the rest room. She could have popped some drugs or she could have taken a leak.
What the article does not say, it that they made Moore walk the white line or take a breathalyzer. They made a lot of assumptions on observation rather then fact. The young girl with Moore, also, stated that Moore was the designated driver.
If she was sober enough to call her boyfriend and notice that someone was following her, then she could have been sober enough to drive.

It always really pisses me off how unsafe the places they tow your car are. It's never just the fine that sucks, but hauling your ass out to some shitty place that's the closest thing to hell on earth. It's never a good thing to be stranded like that. But of course, these women shouldn't have been driving anyway. Not to say at all that they deserved it. Just that local govts punish parking way too severely. I have never felt safe getting my car from a tow lot.
Why this girl made a very ill thought out decision and did not use her common sense, that does not dismiss the fact that she is a victim. No person deserves to be beaten and strangled like that. The accused is the one who is at fault for this horrific tragedy.
Kids have been drinking for years--even underage, and many girls wear miniskirts. This is nothing new. That does not make it ok for a person to kill her.
I do know that I would never wonder around inebriated and alone in this city or even with a friend. Any thought of that was gone with the Imette case, and this seals it. I will also always carry a $20 in the bra for an emergency situation. It is sad that we cannot walk around the city at all hours, how we wish but that is the reality.
As I stated. We don't know if Moore was drunk. Would the Paramedics not have allowed her to ride with her friend to the hospital. Is that something that only happens in the movies.
Moore, was trying to slither out of trouble. There were too many things going wrong that night. Firstly, Moore lied to her parents. Sencondly, Moore didn't stay with her friend. What's up with that. Thirdly, Moore knew that she knew nothing about that area of Manhattan, but she was walking around anyway. Fourthly, her parents did not give their daughter the confidence in them so that she could ask them for "anything." Finally, NYC has a dysfunctional community of citizens and a poor system for taking care of stranded motorist.
"The truth is that if she were ugly or obese, it would not have been a story."
AJ, you forgot black and if it was a story it wouldn't be front page. It would be somewhere down in the corner of the paper on page 20. What can I tell ya, beautiful white women wronged or killed sell papers.
"The truth is that if she were ugly or obese, it would not have been a story."
ohkaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. and the cow also jumps over the moon.
she was a teenager from out of town. that is *always* news. (same reason all legislation, no matter how oppressive or adult-oriented, is "for the children")

That is a good point. In fact the headline would have read.....
FAT UGLY OBESE woman lured into wagon with jumbo box of cream filled Ding Dongs and Twinkies. Perplexed as to how fat lady was hoisted into dumbster. Read more page 132.
Anyone should be able to come party in NYC, completely naked, and get totally wasted if they want to. No one deserves the death penalty or your puritanical judgment for getting drunk, dressing slutty, or walking around anyplace at anytime. If you want to live in a place where women are covered from head to toe on a hot summer night, never get drunk, never party, obey curfew, etc I suggest you move to a nunnery. This is NYC! Don't blame her, blame the PSYCHO KILLER. Duh!
I've been a bridge a tunnel guy all of my life. When I was 13 (back in the 70's at the height of the bad Times Square) I took a bus to Manhattan and visited the World Trade Center observatory because I was bored. At least I did it during the day time. Nevertheless, my parents went nuts when they came home and I wasn't there. A grounding for life does not encompass everything they threatened to do (for my own good).
Which brings me to the point of what advice and training do these girls get? Kids have been told to watch out for dangerous people since parents have existed. What do you think the story of Little Red Riding Hood means? A girl gets her red hood (her period) and is told to watch out for the wolf (a seducer or rapist).
Everyone in my family (sisters and cousins and now kids and nieces and nephews) has grow up being told of the dangers of the big city. Not to terrorize but to be made aware. Try really hard not to put yourself in a risky situation and be with someone trustworthy if you do.
i shuttered when I read what hotel she was taken to...it's 4 blocks from my rehearsal/recording studio.
come to think of it, i'd probably seen the guy around town.
Tim N. brings up a very good point. Parents should educate their kids and let them know they can trust their parents in situations like this.
I think that you are giving white woman a backhanded compliment. In the news, it is usually the white woman out behaving like whores and dressed like sluts, giving themselves to all bidders, by placing themselves in the middle of the news story. They simply don't want to be sober when it happens.
Maybe it is not beautiful white woman that is selling stories. It is the macho man that is praised by his jail house perrs. He is the news.. He is able to conquer the "prized possesion." The news is how she allows something, supposedly, so valueable to be taken in such a cheapened quick way.
If she could call her boyfriend, and was in mortal danger why did she not call 911?
Or maybe everybody needs to be taught that calling 911 & being embarrased is better than being dead...
wow so THAT'S what that story really was about
Looks like we're getting some Craig's List RnR runoff here. I'm noticing a recent influx of over-the-top idiocy and the requisite misspellings that accompany such idle minds.
Shuttered? Valueable? Dumbster? (a self-reflective noun perhaps?)
From where do you morons come? More importantly, can you please return there?
Hey! anony ...m...ass.
The emphasis is on ass.
You didn't get the memo. "We" are here.
Shuttered? Valueable? Dumbster? anonymass? RnR?
You moron. When will you understand? "Birds of a feather flock together." Yo mamma wears combat boots and eats kiddy litter.
I would be truly insulated, bumbaclaut, if your writing weren't such a bulbous carnalization of Damon Wayans' "Oswald Bates" character. Do you not have some desertification to accompany yourself with this fine penitentiary?
I disagree with the beautiful white woman theory. If she were a hot Black woman it would get the same amount of press. Too bad there aren't that many hot black chicks out there. All the ones I see around here look like Queen Latifah than beyonce. And black woman would kick ass so they don't get raped too often.
JO MAM:
At least not enough black chick walking around Manhattan at 4:30 AM with hot mini skirts on.
I agree there are no hot black chicks out there. Black chicks just aren't the flavor for NYC criminals. I guess they should consider themselves lucky.
reallynotme - "Anyone should be able to come party in NYC, completely naked, and get totally wasted if they want to. No one deserves the death penalty or your puritanical judgment for getting drunk, dressing slutty, or walking around anyplace at anytime."
I couldn't agree more, but this is still NYC. Sure, the city has become much more tourist and family friendly over the last 15 - 20 years, but there are still a lot of horribly deranged scumbags out there that WILL HURT YOU if given the opportunity. Everyone should feel that they can carry on and have a good time but you have to be smart.
if anyone is bored, here is her friend's myspace page: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=6013098
Oh, for #11 - one of the articles describes how in the surveillance video at the hotel he is seen propping her up as she entered. She did not willingly walk into the hotel.
Um... decertification (people in glass houses, ya know).
LOL.........
thread number 40.......from xnan Right On!!!!
LMAO..............
Hey...!!!!!! anony...m....ass......!!!! are you paying attention?
(i am rolling with laughter) Bah...ha ha ha he he he he ha ha
*shrugs* She looks biracial to me. But the race of the people involved doesn't matter. This is a tragedy and the criminals involved should have the book thrown at them.
I am wondering if they need a NYPD officer on duty at the impound lot and a drunk tank there, since you would expect that a lot of drunks would show up to get their vehicles after a night of drinking.

Thank you for that point. They, NYC, are aware of drunk people trying to pick up vehicles. There is supposedly a sign at the impound yard regard the surrender of cars to intoxicated people. It happens often enough. Why not detain people trying to pick up a vehicle while under the influence. Make them pay for the "babysitter" /time it takes for someone to sit with them while they sobber up.
what are you guys smoking? this chick is not hott at all. she's kinda an uggo. She looks like my doberman.
yea shuttered. like i felt my soul folding inwards as if it were attached by hinges.
ah, i got nothing. it was a fucking misspelling. shoot me.
The only persons to blame for her killing is the sick psycho bastard.
But,
I think if they had not gotten their car towed they would have driven drunk. It's a problem, because people go to meatpacking district and chelsea, get wasted and try to drive home.
None of this would have happened, if NJ transit and the Port Authority buses ran "night owl" service to take drunks home, then they wouldn't be stranded in manhattan in middle of the night drunk or drunk driving
Besides the 24/7 PATH train (which only services Jersey City, Hoboken, and downtown Newark), their is no public transportation back to Jersey, and the taxis charge me and my girl 60 dollars for a 5 minute ride into Jersey City.
Someone missed the sarcasm/humor bus. Stay where you are: next time it comes around I'm sure you'll catch it.
I understand why people are reluctant to "blame the victim," but come on!! Consider the following:
1. She Parks Illegally - No big deal, but not exactly smart given the NYPD's hyper-vigilant Traffic Enforcement unit.
2. She Drinks Illegally - No big deal, but AT LEAST make arrangements to get home safely.
3. She was Prepared to Drive Drunk - If her car hadn't been towed, you know she'd have driven home drunk. If she killed someone on the way home, would she still be the victim? Do you think she gave a sh*t about whose life she might take driving home? It's only the NYPD Tow Pound folks that stopped her from driving drunk and putting others' lives at risk!
4. She Used NO Common Sense - Why not take a cab to NJ and return for the car in the morning? Or call the boyfriend for a ride home rather than going to the tow lot? Why roam the streets of NYC in the pre-dawn hours when you don't know where the hell the dangerous neighborhoods might be.
Does all this mean that she deserved to die? Absolutely not, but none of the points above has anything to do with her color, mode of dress, etc. either. The fact is, she ultimately created the perfect environment in which a predator could take advantage of her. She has to bear some measure of blame for that.
By the way, if you were out on the town that night yourself, be glad she didn't get behind the wheel of her car because she might have put you in the morgue in her place!!
Natural Selection -
She made some bad decisions, no doubt, but what happened to her is still a tragedy. I don't think anyone's arguing that it was smart for her to leave the lot and wander down the West Side Highway by herself, or that the clerk at the impound lot should have handed over the car. Nevertheless, she didn't deserve what happened to her. No one deserves that.
Kids do dumb shit all the time. I'm sure everyone on this thread has made at least one stupid decision in the past that could have gotten them in a lot of trouble - "There but for the grace of God," et cetera. As paranoid as I am about safety, I know that even I've done it before. People who are NOT kids anymore make bad decisions when they go out drinking, too. It usually doesn't end like this.
RIP, Jennifer.
yeah i guess you can say she was getting herself into the situations...underaged drinking...i dunno whats the big fuss about that...
Here is (hopefully) a better link regarding the disappearance in June of Chanel Petro-Nixon, a church-going, straight-A teen, whose body was later found stuffed in a trash bag. Chanel mysteriously disappeared in a busy area of Brooklyn while on her way to apply for a summer job at a local restaurant.

remember beautiful nicole "what are you going to do? shoot us?" dufresne? how drunk do you have to be to argue with someone that's got a gun pointed at your chest?
http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/martial_arts/113774
or what about beautiful imette st. guillen, another one that was out drunk, alone, in a bar at 4am? her mother says what happened to her is the state's fault, the city's fault, the bar owner's fault, the bartender's fault. everyone's fault but imette's.
http://www.hubpolitics.com/archives/cat_st_guillen_murder.php
how many times have i traipsed through the lower east side on a saturday night and seen drunken white people laughing and staggering through the streets, like that entire neighborhood is their private little playground?
get this, loud and clear: 1. no one is entitled to a good time. no one is entitled to anything. 2. it's not smart to be drunk in public anywhere, ever -- especially in new york city. i don't care how clean it looks or how safe anyone feels. it's still dangerous. it's still new york city. everybody knows that. 3. race matters. please. everybody knows that, too. i didn't like what ko said ("knew it. Black guy."), but at least he's honest. it's probably what everyone's thinking and are to pc to let it out.
hey, JO MAM & BUMBCLAUT -- snap out if it. there are a lot of very beautiful black women in this city. i'm sure there's an exceptionally good reason as to why you don't know any. and as quiet as it's kept, and in spite of their inherent ability to "kick ass," horrible things happen to them all the time, including rape and murder.
gee. i guess some of them don't really know how to kick ass, after all.
My name is Talia Kenan. I was with Jen. She was an amazing daughter, sister, and friend, and forever will be missed. I love her so so so much.
We had no idea that this is what was going to happen.... we went into the city to get away and have a little fun thats all.... we didn't keep track of our drinks and had a few too many and probably got the date rape drug put into it... I passed out and when I woke up she was gone, she was probably scared b/c she knew I called the cops b/c they wouldn;t give me my car and she didnt want to get in trouble so she walked off. Its such a horrible thing that happened. NO ONE should have to go thru that. she has an amazing family. i feel so responsible. everyone should take a lesson from this... WAKE UP CALL its time to change.
I feel really bad for Jennifer. And all that has been said has some merit. The media writes to sell news papers. The racial thing is prevalant in our society. Too Bad! I know Draymond and he is not Black. The thing we should focus on is to teach our children about the dangers of drinking, driving and drinking, and what to do when you drink and what not to do. We should teach our children how to call for help. When in trouble reach out to anyone in your path and more importantly, PRAY!
Who knew back when Giuliani was mayor and now Bloomberg that gentrification would lead to more white people getting murdered?
Whites in harlem, East harlem, bed stuy, LES, East NY, crown heights. keep them coming.
Another consequence to overdevelopement and greed.
Stay in Jersey.
You think it's different there? Nope. It's the problem of all America. You can't escape it.
http://www.ambustat.com
We should do something about the fact that the night is not a safe place for women. Men and women know it is dangerous for women, and 999 out of a 1000 times, you'll be fine, but it only takes once.
As for her "decisions," while intoxicated, it is a medical fact that severe drunkness leads to judgement impairment. You can not talk about her deciding to wander off as a rational decision.
What bothers me is that the NYPD were there and could have helped her. If it is a problem that drunk people stumble up to the impound lot (that is undeniably in a seedier part of town), then why hasn't our city government done something to make it safer, especially for women? The NYPD's job is to serve and to protect.
Finally, we've got a problem in this society with men and violence. This should be addressed, but we would rather blame the victim--what was she wearing, why was she there, she was drunk--then address the fact that we have predatory males who attack women regardless of what they're wearing, what time of day it is and whether they are drunk or not. I hope Coleman gets his just due.
It seems that the mayor and police are complicit in these murders. It is a well known fact that underage girls are able to into these clubs every
