City Workers Should Take Mass Transit

2006_06_illegalpark.jpgWho knew that city employees' cars parked in city spaces deny the city $46 million in annual revenue? Schaller Consulting has issued a new study that shows more city workers drive to work because they get free parking, but if city workers "commuted by auto at the same rate as their private sector counterparts, 19,200 fewer vehicles would enter Manhattan each day." Which then translates into $46 million in meter revenue in the area from the Battery to 59th Street. The Mayor's office tells the Daily News that "city has reduced the number of parking placards by 12% since last year."

In April, Transportation Alternatives issued its "Uncivil Servants" survey that showed all the illegally parked government cars downtown. And tthis story comes just in time as Transportation Alternatives is looking for more volunteers to be "field researchers" and look for illegaly parked government cars for part 2 of their "Uncivil Sevants" Survey. TA needs volunteers on Wednesday morning, between 9-10AM - more details here. And Streetsblog has photos of government parking with expired permits or just NYPD notebooks to show it's a police officer's car, while NYC Streets Renaissance has video fo illegal Chinatown parking.

I'm wondering if all this publicity is what caused the cop who parked his personal vehicle in the bus stop in front of my place for the last 3 months to stop doing it.

My personal favorate is the illegally parked car with out of state plates and a NYPD parking plackard.

good job TA!

What about abuse of privileges given for movie/TV shoots? Every time I walk by Abingdon Square I see the same Law & Order mini-SUV with a permit from the Mayor's office. Clearly the owner lives around there. I don't know if it's breaking the parking violations, but still, take it out of your window.

you voted for him, you know these nypd will be glad to give you a ticket or a beating.
Now who's going to protect you when Al Queda hits?
the cop who lives out in Suffolk or Rockland, sure he can. If he can get through traffic on the Tappan Zee or LIE.
Don't fool yourselves, you have to protect yourself.
No one else will.

Wow-the streetsblog image identifies an unmarked police vehicle as a personal car. The street renaissance video presumes that all the cars parked come from the suburbs..... no suppositions there right-because you know they followed everyone home to Brooklyn to check?!!

Get a clue folks-you haven't an idea of how the city works but you feel free to blog about it.
