Homeland Security Makes NYC Out to Be Big Crapple

Okay, Gothamist totally gets that Homeland Security's funding for urban areas was cut overall. And we know - and appreciate - that NYC got lots of money in the first few years of the program. But reading this explanation of why NYC's bid for funding led to a 40% decrease in money is rich:
Homeland Assistant Secretary Tracy Henke, a former GOP Senate aide, told NEWSWEEK that, in the Feds' assessment, the Empire State Building was counted as a tall building and the Brooklyn Bridge as a vital transportation facility. (The Statue of Liberty was counted as a New York state, rather than NYC, asset.)So, if you think that lovable NYC icon is a monument or landmark, you'll probably disagree with the Department of Homeland Security, who would probably reclassify everything in the city in order not to pay up. Representative Anthony Weiner pointed out these anti-terror costs from the DHS:
- A $30,000 trailer for the October Mushroom Festival in Madisonville, Tex.If NYC set up more bingo halls...
- $160,000 for plasma TVs in Montgomery County, Md.
- $36,200 to block terrorists from raising money in Kentucky bingo halls.
And it seems like Center for Disease Control funding for NY will be cut as well. Hello, avian flu!

how bout the feds srutinized what NYC spent with it's money?
I'm sure we'll find some fishy stuff in there, too.
dhstsa,
You toothless hick, go ahead and scrutinize...
Our missapropriations are far more interesting than mushroom trailors and bingo halls.
well lookee what we got here,
some city slicka.
I say we look into what was spent by the NYPD,
so does the Guardian society.
say bye bye to moola, baybeeeeeee
Secession! Who's with me?
Pull NYC (with Liberty and Ellis Islands) from the Union. Keep all the tourist dollars from those places, Times Square, etc. for ourselves. Screw the feds and the state. Then and only then will we get our fair share. Madisonville can get all the money it wants, but none of it would come from our pockets.
I wonder if the NYPD has an "October Mushroom Festival"??
you know 30k is nothing in this city,
why are you guys bitching?
no wonder the rest of the country hates nyc and always will.
Wait..This is the reason why there are no longer several police cars parked in traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge, both directions, creating massive congestion, zero security and lowering safety? What a pity.
NYC wouldn't last two minutes on it's own.
the NYPD always has a foot post at the Brooklyn bridge.
not to mention the convoy of nypd cars by city hall.
Can you inbreads who hate this city so much please stop reading a blog devoted to the city itself...
PS- I think I hear your sister screwing a pig, oh wait that's your dad.
"inbreads" LOL
lemme guess, a cuny grad.
Actually crimson, I'm an Ivy grad, it's that I'm trading gold futures and have limited time to battle you overall-wearing peons on my second LCD.
alabamacrimson Said:
Ok, that caused me to LOL...
Back on track: Any Gov't budget has lots of pork in it. One would think that the DHS/TSA would have less but why would it?
hardeehardeehaha,
you guys wouldn't last one night.
No directions for tourists, and I'm not going to try hide my giggles at what they're wearing either. Take your crocodile tears and fat-ass-bunched shorts back to the bingo hall.
not to worry baha,
the true nyc haters has been boycotting your city for a long time.
those are TRUE AMERICANS.
American by birth, SOUTHERN by the grace of GOD!
Trading gold futures is going to be a useful skill when the revolution comes. You'll be among the first up against the wall.
And what a shock you need to brag about being an Ivy grad. Small penis? Or are you afraid that if we didn't know you went to an Ivy college we would realize how dumb you really are.
God Bless Trolls.
anyone notice a staggering upswing in the amount of trolls throughout the internet, over the last year?
Perhaps the answer to getting some money will be ticketing and/or all federal owned vehicles that are illegally parked.
I was at Ladder 115 in LIC yesterday and their rig is a 1988 vintage Mack which is in deplorable condition - it is like the rig that the fireman fell out of last year. Meanwhile, East Bumblefuck gets millions of dollars to buy new fire engines from the feds. Something is not right.
What's the over/under on Toby launching into one of his hate speeches?
I found some money for New York City. Divert the $18 million in the transportation bill for the Highline. That smells like pork to me.

small penis, and very dumb
Actually no penis. I'm a woman you morons. Just cause your sis has trouble fucking that pig don't assume all women are that dumb.
I'm not following this. Are they saying they already gave money to cover the Booklyn Bridge as a "vital transportation link" and the ESB as a "tall building" and THAT's why they don't appear under "monuments"? That's how the article reads.
Although a mushroom trailer (whatever that is) doesn't sound like a monument. Hey, now that it's been announced on the Internet, maybe Al-Quaeda will blow it up?
No. I don't geddit. Gothamist: please explain.
Some of the dumbest people I've met in New York are traders. Even you don't have a penis you're still incredibly insecure.
And if you expect in depth analysis, Gothamist is the wrong place to be. This place is all about getting rich quick. Boost traffic, sell ads, sell web site. Rinse. Repeat.
Maybe Bush and Cheney decided they would attack somewhere in the heartland next time - you know, an attempt to keep those red states red.
Great. Now the conspiracy theorists are out. No shortage of lunatics on the streets of New York. This one just happens to have a computer.
No shortage of conspiracy theorists in America, sigh. Recent Zogby poll re: 9/11:
Poll results indicate 42% believe there has indeed been a cover up (with 10% unsure) and 45% think "Congress or an International Tribunal should re-investigate the attacks, including whether any US government officials consciously allowed or helped facilitate their success" (with 8% unsure). The poll of American residents was conducted from Friday, May 12 through Tuesday, May 16, 2006. Overall results have a margin of sampling error of +/- 2.9.
HEY! were you taking that picture from my office window?!?!
You can spin those poll numbers many different ways. One way would be that the country has been split 50-50 Democrat and Republican for some time now and that those poll numbers simply reflect the half that hate George W. Bush.
And like most things, I'd like to see the original poll question. I recently got a questionaire from the Democratic Party that was really just a request for money. One of the questions regarding taxation went something like: Do you support A) tax cuts for the wealthiest citizens or B) higher taxes to support our obligations to the nation's senior citizens. Hardly scientific.
I'd like to see the city or police calculate how much they waste on the Critical Mass police manpower and then perhaps that could cover some of the costs.
Still, NYC should get more money back from the Feds, especially for security.
But don't you know that cyclists are the next worst things to terrorists? Or at least that's what a lot of the trolls here on Gothamist say. Well, Critical Mass is a place for radicalizing cyclists. And you know what to do about radicals. Arrest 'em, door 'em, knock 'em off their bikes!
