Hamsters in the Hizzy

2006_05_hamsters.jpgThe NY Times' City section chats with the proprietress of the New York Hamster House. Yes, the NY Hamster House, a shelter for homeless hamsters (and some gerbils). Jessica Wells started the shelter when she found some hamsters in the Theater District, and now she accepts hamsters as well as looks for prospective adoptive parents for a brood that includes Simone de Beauvoir (who is "concerned with the rights of women hamsters and the feminist hamster cause"), Baby Mama (a boy, though) and Michael Bloomberg (pictured, who "enjoys non-smoking establishments and the number 6 subway, as well as running in his exercise ball," along with brother Jackson). You rock on, Jessica!

And, yes, there is a NYHH blog.

Thanks for the compliments and good-hamster-karma, Gothamist :)

Although, I actually found Kaiser Wilhelm about 140 blocks north of the theater district, in Inwood. But, he really is cute enough to be on Broadway so it all evens out.

Let me know if you ever need a hamster-mascot. I've got cute ones, viscious ones, mayoral ones....

Now the Hamster House and Michael Bloomberg the hamster is famous after the NYT article. But CityCynic.com discovered them first with "Michael Bloomberg is a male dwarf hamster!"

So why hasn't anyone adopted him yet?
