Map of the Day: Where All the Jews At?

2006_4_mapjews1.jpg

According to this cool map, it looks like the seders tonight are mainly concentrated in the Northeast, California, and Florida-- although there are suprising pockets of Hebraicness in Vegas, Denver, and Atlanta! The same site provides maps for various Christian denominations. Here are the maps for Catholics and Muslims. If you're an atheist, the most godless area of the country looks to be just north of San Francisco in Marin.

ooh, oregon looks good for the godless.

oddly, all the muslims are where the jews are at... or is it the other way? ;)

Marin is only that small county just north of San Francisco. The two bigger counties showing godlessness right above San Francisco are Sonoma and Mendocino counties (Marin County is fairly small). Other big godless parts of California, according to the map are Shasta, Lassen, Siskiyou, etc - all pretty rural (except for the city of Redding, which of decent size and is in Shasta county I think). Maybe there are some mountain man atheists living there.

It's also interesting to note that Santa Cruz county is atheist as well - hippies!

Is'nt this information almost 7 years old?

Vegas, Denver, and Atlanta don't surprise me. But Idaho? Cool.

No Scientologists?

I would love to see this information broken down by zipcode. Murray Hill (10016) would have the highest density of 21-26 year old jews in the world.

atlanta and charleston/savannah have always (like, since colonial times) had substantial jewish populations. in fact the secretary of state of the confederacy was a jewish new orleanian. weird, huh?

is the idaho county where sun valley is? i bet the distribution is skewed a bit by summer/vacation homes. i see a higher-than-expected concentration around aspen and vail, too.

what really blows my mind is that orange square right over texarkana, texas. lawdy!

Michigan and Ohio are surprisingly ungodly. Also surprised that Indiana has nearly all counties

Hmmm, surprised not a higher % in Houston(Harris Counyt. And it was beat out by San Antonio? Don't remember many in SA but I had lots of Jewish buddies while growing up in Houston. Some neighborhoods there came close to areas of LA and NYC in Jewishness. Weird.

this information is just plain wrong. i'm from an area where there are a substantial number of catholics, and the map shows none reported. and yes, i was living there in 2000.

Why are the key colors different on the map for Muslims? The bright yellow used for the lowest percentage group stands out a lot more than the light tan used in the Jewish and Catholic maps.

Just what sort of methodology went into getting the data for this "religion map?"

I can't ever recall filling out any kind of form that required me to indicate my religion.
