Wake for Nixzmary Brown, But Blame Is Just Starting
Yesterday, Nixzaliz Santiago, the mother of 7 year old Nixzmary Brown who was killed at the abusive hands of Santiago's boyfriend Cesar Rodriguez - and Santiago herself - granted jailhouse interviews with the Daily News and NY Post. She tells the Daily News that she still loved Rodriguez. She does admit that she saw/heard Rodriguez "punish" Brown that fateful night (dunking the 36 pound child in the water-filled bathtub, hitting her head against the faucet) - but went to sleep afterward. She says she was afraid of Rodriguez beating her; she also said that other female inmates at Rikers have threatened to kill her.
Santiago told the Post that Brown "had an attitude" - which is why Rodriguez would isolate her from the other children in the family. She said she didn't think Rodriguez was especially abusive and claims he never sexually abused her daughter or tied her up in a chair (a chair with ropes tied to it was found in the apartment). Both articles are particularly disturbing, because they paint a horrifying picture of spousal/partner abuse, abuse to children, and a culture of the home where the other children seem to have pointed to Brown whenever sometihng would go wrong so she could take the blame.
Various city agencies met yesterday afternoon to understand how the case seemed to have fallen through people's hands - and the NY Times says that the NYPD's role in the case is unclear, as there are conflicting reports about the level of their involvement in these kinds of cases. But most of the blame seems to be swirling around the "inaction" of the Administration for Children's Services. Rodriguez will undergo psychiatric evaluations at Bellevue. A wake is scheduled at the Ortiz Funeral Home in Manhattan at 22 First Avenue today and tomorrow and her funeral is planned for St. Mary's Church on Grand Street on Wednesday.

Let me tell you something: this person simply birthed this child, but clearly was not a mother to her. I am so sick and tired of the women who are having children they know they do not want. This is evident by the fact that I don't care how hard it is to get a 'man' none of this is worth having that same man abuse your child (i.e., mentally, sexually, physically). The cliche's "god works in mysterious ways" and "everything happens for a reason" really apply in this case. Each time we ask why brutalities are comitted by such disturbed individuals. Nixmary Brown suffered the ultimate sacrifice that should inspire us to be kind to our children for they are being shaped to become the adults that can change the future or otherwise repeat disfunctional behavior. The priority here should not be to celebritise the murderers but to campaign on protecting our children, supporting orginizations for children of abuse, and creating opportunities for children that instills positive influence. Nixmary's life was sacrificed not for her killers but for our children who should have the spotlight and hopefully be rescued from torture. What better way to honor her.
Rodriguez served this country and is a hero. Anyone who speaks out against him is against the troops. All of you leftist, America-hating terrorist sympathizers should stop criticizing a stepfather for disciplining a wild and willful child. She was at fault, not him.

Until this country does away with the worst type of child abuse of them all, abortion on demand, this is going to continue to happen and I, and a lot of other people, will continue to cry. We are being taught that human life is disposable from its earliest moment, in the womb. When you devalue life like that, it just opens the door for these horrendous child killings. The mindset in this country is that life in the womb is not worth a plug nickle, when does “worth” begin? Apparently for a lot of child abusers and child murderers, the answer is “never”. May God have mercy on us all.

Brian is truly the biggest idiot for his ridiculous comments about beating a child. It is one thing to discipline a child, but killing an innocent child is something else. I support our troops, but I do not support the war in Iraq. I am a teacher and I can see that Brian is not an educated person with his stupid comments. Rest in peace Nixzmary. I have been reading all your comments, and I too am very sad about Nixzmary's tragic death. Also as sad as I am about her death, I am appalled that some of the WEAKER few, would choose this site to harrass this poor angelic child from beyond her grave. Has she not suffered enough? Do you really need to blame her and make fun of her name? I wonder what name she would choose to call you? (I have a few in mind myself). God tells us to forgive and not to judge others, so I have tried to forgive all those involved... simply because the sooner I forgive them, the sooner God will judge them. All fear the wrath of God and I thank the good Lord for calling that child home ..away from those so called parents.

This seems to happen every few years or so... A child is murdered, brutally. The media is all over it. Child protection agency employees are fired and we are promised that things will change. Then the sensationalism dies down and nothing changes and a few years later another baby is murdered by another abusive piece of shit. Looks like things will never change. People will still give birth to too many children who are not cared for...Abused children will fall thru the cracks...some will be killed. Starting to think the only cure is to pull the child out of the home when there is even a hint of abuse no matter how much of a fuss the parent makes. They talk to our children about getting in cars with strangers, they talk to them about safe sex. Why did the school not take this child aside and talk to her about the suspected abuse. The called cps a number of times? I think that every school should talk to kids about un normal home situations. This girl obviously didnt know any better to tell anyone and niether did her siblings. probley because this was all they knew, abuse was thier life ,your surroundings in your home is all you know. Lets face it every child is born innocent untill they are in the hands of someone who takes that away. These teachers are with our children 7 hours a day 245 days a year they are a great influence on how our children grow and mature. I know if I saw this girl and I worked in her school there is no way I could just make a call and turn my back.
