The Iceman Leaveth
As some of you have pointed out, one of our favorite summer spots, NYC Icy, is no more. Like you, we had the same reaction -- severe depression. Where are we supposed to go now to get our cool summer treats on, especially on a day like today?!? We've come up with a few suggestions on our own, and the Daily News added a bunch to our list.
Otto Enoteca Pizzeria/Gel-Otto Gelato Cart
Yes, not exactly ices, but the sorbet tastes like fresh fruit kicked up to an extreme intensity, and the gelato is not to be missed. Your choice of indoors (at 1 Fifth Avenue, at 8th Street) or outdoors (on the northwest corner of Washington Square Park).
The Lemon Ice King of Corona
We hit this place up on a bike ride one hot summer day and have been in love ever since. For those with outer-borough phobia, this one's well worth the trip. 52-02 108th St. at 52nd St., Queens, (718) 699-5133.
Il Laboratorio del Gelato, 95 Orchard St., between Broome & Delancey Sts.212 343 9922 & Ciao Bella Gelato, 285 Mott Street(and more)212-431-3591
Once again, not quite ices, but some damn good gelato. Ciao Bella tends to be a bit sweeter than Il Laboratorio, so follow your tastebuds.
Any and all ice suggestions are welcome, or more accurately, needed for medicinal purposes.

whoa, how about the chinatown ice cream factory at 65 bayard street?!? you can't forget such flavors as black sesame, almond cookie, & green tea!
I know it's old news and I know it's a boat ride away but Ralph's Ice on Staten Island is wicked.
i remember there being a a water ice place on the upper west side, on broadway, i think in the high 70s or low 80s. precise, i know. but maybe someone else knows what i'm talking about? it was definitely on the west side of the street.
UNCLE LOUIE G'S!!!!!
available in many places.
Yeah I second the Uncle Louie G. Vote. Check out this list of flavors: http://www.unclelouieg.com/italian-ices.html
I do wonder though if the "Uncle Louie G Hummer" I see driving all over Park Slope runs on hybrid diesel ices. 'Cause if it doesn't that could cause trouble in ice-land.
Tasti D-Lite! http://tastidaddicts.blogspot.com
Any Deliciado Coco Helado cart -- the one at 96th and Broadway often has parcha (passionfruit), my favorite flavor.
Uncle Louie G will always get my vote with Deliciado Coco Helado second. But Deliciado Coco Helado is second for only one real reason. The vendors I have encountered don't use ices squeeze cups! They just use waxy dixie cups and such. What's up with that? The whole point of an ice is being able to squeeze the heck out of the thing when you're near the end.
Deliciado Coco Helado, please start using/selling squeeze cups and sales will pick up like crazy!
When you say "photo of us", are you with the Invisible Man or sumpin? Or is that the Royal Us?
Uncle Louie G's Holy Cannoli!!
New place at Chelsea Market (by the kitchen supply store):
JIMMY'S GELATO! Sorbetti and fantastic gelati. The real thing.

"us" is the Gothamist royal "we." It's just lil 'ol me, really.
Rita's is the bomb - http://www.ritasice.com/. You haven't lived until you've had a gelati. No NYC stores yet, but where I live in Woodbridge, I've filled a couple of buy 10 get one free cards!
Rita's is disgusting.
Overly sweet and chemical tasting.
ew.
My long time favorite has been Roccos bakery on Bleecker west of sixth Ave. They make their own ices, and have a not-too-sweet and very refreshing lemon ice, and cremolatta, a sot of almond flavor with a milky base, to name two. They serve the ices at their tables or in those paper cups to go, a dollar (if I remember correctly) for a small size. I highly recommend these ices, I have never had better, and have been going for years..(and years and years). Try it, everyone I bring there loves them.

Um... the Otto's Ice cost $5. I think that's worth mentioning.
