Jenna and Barbara: Good Time Gals
Last night, Jenna and Barbara Bush solidified their position as probably the most fun First Daughters the White House will see with their short speech/silly comedy routine last night (text of speech here):
JENNA: You know all those times when you're growing up and your parents embarrass you? Well, this is payback time on live TV.Gothamist almost expected some canned studio laugh track to come in. Anyway, our friend JW pointed out that the Kerry daughters are smart and seemingly intellectual, wondering if the Bush twins would get any smarter. Gothamist doubts that matters as much as making happy hour. We may not want their dad to be our president, but we wouldn't mind doing shots with them (we'd see a movie with Alexandra Kerry and ask Vanessa about this cold we can't shake).
BARBARA: Take this. I know it's hard to believe, but our parents' favorite term of endearment for each other is actually Bushy.
Jodi Wilgoren's NY Times article notes they were underdressed (casual chic - not Talbots conservative) and that quoting Outkast would "fill any coolness gap their father might face with the MTV set." Insert a Nelson Muntz HA-ha here. Vanessa Grigoriadis had a great feature about the Bush girls in New York; basically, they seem like your average 21 year-olds.

They are the kids of the candidates, not the candidates. I think they did a good job - as did Kerry's. Kerry's kids talk about giving a hamster mouth-to-mouth, and we call them intellectual. Face it, they are all hot. Any any of them could be standing there talking about grass growing and we'd watch.
I'm sure Andre 3000 is loving having his lyrics used by the Bush twins to score cool points with the Red Staters. I hear tomorrow they're gonna perform Bombs Over Bagdad.

I'm surprised to see everyone giving them such a break. They are the "kids of the candidates", the product of the person who wants to lead the United States. If he produces twits, what does that say about him? I'm not saying Bush is responsible for everything the girls do, but really, is that a speech he can look back and say he's proud of them? I don't care if they normally act like "average 21 year olds" and I imagine that they would be fun to do shots with. But I think that even your average 21 year old can act a little more grown up when addressing at least half of the nation.

They are as shallow and uninformed as their father. Somehow their jokes aren't as funny while men and women of the same age are dying in Iraq. The Yale English department must be very proud.
For the record: Barbara and Jenna turn 23 on Nov. 25th!
Can't they hire writers? Can't they act like they're smarter? I'm sure they are social butterflies and with all that money and good breeding by their mother know which utensil is for what, but I really don't want to see either candidates kids onstage. They bore the crap out of me. More crap than I care to spare.
The sad thing is, they probably DID hire writers, but were too dumb to figure out they were given crap.

It's kind of sad when the highlight of the RNC is the Bush Twins uttering lines that would have made anyone else cringe.And then find the speechwriters and flog them to death. I gagged.It would have been hysterically funny if it weren't so apalling. It definitely will go down in my book as one of the worst speeches ever given in televised history.
What was with all the bad pop-culture references.Bono and Mono? The Bushes shing-a-linging to "Hey Ya?" All the while giggling and hairflipping like a couple of barhopping floozies out for a good time? Hey,we've engaged in some of the most cynical,base, offensive pandering ever to shore up our base,so hey,let's hit that youth vote?
Family loyalty is great and everything,but there are some lines that should never be crossed...

I'd be embarrassed if they were my daughters. They are so shallow, so vacuuous. These "nuts" didn't fall far from the shrub, obviously. And the media gives them a pass (for the most part)just like dear old dad.
That was painful...I don't look at the canidates kids to see who I want to vote for, but that was just stupid!
