Say It Ain't So, Joe!
Gothamist nearly had a panic attack when we read the Chowhound Manhattan message board today and saw this rumor about the possibility of Joe's Pizza closing due to a rent increase. Joe's has been one of our neighborhood favorites for years, serving us one of the crispiest slices in the 'hood, and has provided us with many a late-night delivery over the past decade. The demise of Joe's would be like a knife to the heart. Or the stomach. We're hoping that, like the recent B&H Dairy scare, it's just a rumor, and that Joe's will continue to be our go-to spot for grabbing a slice.

I can't vouch for the authenticity of the statement, but Kenny of Shopsin's told me this story a few years ago. Apparently, the owner of the corner building housing Joe's,had a strong dislike for his family so as in order to screw them in the future gave Joe something like a fifty year lease in the mid-70's at a slightly above market rent of a thousand dollars a month. If true it would seem as if the rumors would be false.
