P. Diddy Gets The Vote Out
Sean "P. Diddy" Combs announced his voter-registration/voter interest drive initiative, Citizen Change, earlier this week. The way to reach the 42 million voters between 18 and 30? The urgent, fatalistic and ultimately pithy: "Vote or Die!" (It also sounds like a video game.) The program is non-partisan, non-profit, and chock full of celebrity endorsers, with 50 Cent, Leonardo DiCaprio, Snoop Dogg, and Jay-Z and Ashton Kutcher on board. Vote or Die! shirts went on sale earlier this week, and Diddy Combs will be making appearance at both conventions - the Democratic National Convention on July 29 and the Republican National Convention on September 2.
Ta-Nehisi Coates' Village Voice article about Diddy's press conference is critical ("Combs's effort reached beyond celebrity media whoredom into political media whoredom" referring political strategist James "Serpenthad" Carville who is working with Diddy) but gives Diddy credit: "Arrogant he may be, but Combs is one hell of a showman." Newsday's Ellis Henican is dazzled by Combs, calling him what the election needs. Gothamist has to hand it to Diddy - he's out there, trying to do get young people interested in issues, whether he's running to help NYC city schools or seizing politics to remind people they do have a voice, so we can only wish him the best.

That said, I think "Vote or Die" is extreme and silly and ultimately dilutes the urgency of Diddy's message. Despite the admirable vote-rocking context, the imperative voice followed by the word "Die!" can't help but be anxiety-producing. The whole Diddy thing is starting to take on these creepy crypto-fascist overtones -- have you seen the building-high billboard of him with power fist raised, looming over Times Square? Makes me feel like I'm supposed to genuflect or something.
Did MTV ever give an official response as to why there wasn't a "rock the vote" campaign in 2000?
Only people riding in mini-vans strapped into adult car seats wearing helmets and eye protection would object to the use of the word die in this context. get over yourself. Whore the Vote. Vote or lose control of your bowels. Vote or 50cent will de-flower your daughter, etc...
Puff is an arse, but I find his contribution admirable. Barbara Streisand has much to say on politics but doesn't do a thing. I guess that makes P. Didd less phony than others.

MTV says the shirts are made by Sean John, P Diddy's clothing company. They are not available on-line, they you can only get them in stores
"Fatalistic" and "urgent" it may be, but I can't agree that the slogan is "pithy." The Bush administration has initiated multiple wars and declared that the War on Terror may well extend beyond our lifetimes.
The fact that they have been working to reinstate the draft (for women and men alike, no exceptions for college students, and they've already begun tightening up the Canadian border) demonstrates that for young Americans, the possibility of dying very soon if we don't vote is REAL.
(Don't believe me about the draft? Check out or Google "Bush draft reinstate" or anything like that. Rumsfeld has claimed that they're not currently planning to reinstate the draft, but they're also trying to push the bill through such that it will be effective in 2005.)
(Side note: other deaths due to by the Bush administration's policies include those caused by increased pollution brought about by Bush's favors to big businesses. The draft is rather more concrete, though.)

I found the Vote or Die! shirt on EBAY. Don't know if it's real or not, but who cares. You only got about another 2 months til Nov to rock it.
Aight I found this post hilarious, I am trying to figure out if it is about where my man can get his shirt or if it's about politics. I saw the shirt when I was in Dr. Jays about 2 weeks ago, I was gonna cop it but the price was 30 dollars and I was thinking that is alot of money for a T-shirt so I let it slide. Later on I thought about it and realized the shirt was hot. A week later being August 20th I decide to go get it they had one 2xl left. I sparked a convo with shorty from the store she was like they only got like 5 in and they sold out quickly. They had one sz large left for any one who wants it, it's @ Dr. Jays in Newark New Jersey!

it's okay that all the stars are making statements about voting in these big cities, but they really need to take a look at these smaller towns which the problems from the last election occured, if they want to be active i would love for one of them to visit a town like mine.

Here, it's been almost 3 yrs since America was disrespected in 2001 and all he's done is USED our 911 victims as an excuse to go into Iraq and finish what his father was unable to by stealing the oil rights and taking Sadam out.
