Boomerang's Back

2004_03_boomer.jpg

Boomerang, the baby tiger cub who had been ill-advisedly purchased by a Post reporter from a sketchy animal dealer, which then caused a mini NY tabloid pissing match as the Daily News revealed the baby tiger got ill under the Post reporter's care (because he was taken from his mother too soon), is back in the spotlight. The Daily News cries, "You lion?" while the Post shouts, "Judge is Lion King," with news that Boomerang should go to the animal activist who was "helping" the Post with their "expose" of the animal trade. The tiger animal trade became big news when Ming the tiger was found in a Harlem apartment. The Post plans to send Boomerang to the animal reserve owned by Tippi Hedren, Shambala. Noah's Lost Ark, an animal reserve in Ohio where Boomerang AND Ming live now, plans to appeal.

Last Octoober, the Daily News ran two articles (1, 2) about how Boomerang cub was doing - all while damning the Post's stupidity. The Daily News also made a big deal of raising $30,000 for the animal reserve, but the reserve's lawyer says, "I'm not aware of any money they've raised. Do you believe everything you read in the Daily News." Of course, that quote was in the Post. And while Gothamist just wants to know Boomerang is okay, we love seeing pictures of him!

Thanks for the Boomerang photo. I would please like to squdge him.

As humans beings, we only care about the cute, cuddly animals. The ugly ones, no matter how much more important they are to the eco-system, we could'nt give a damn about.

Dear Kojak, My dog is horrible looking. Guests won't even touch him. He smells like moldy wool socks. My cat's face looks like it was smashed in by a hammer. His breath is like a small sewage vent. They are both very well fed and we love them. I'm glad vultures dig road kill. And I love the sight of worms in my garden. But fleas and ticks in the house bum me out.

I see no one updated the story of Boomerang since he was a cute and cuddly cub. Well, for your information he was removed from Noah's Lost Ark on January 17 2005 by the same people that purchased him (Long) at 8 DAYS old (a few newspapers got that one wrong - they kept saying MONTHS), which is why he DID get sick - he was aspirating his "milk" because the reportors didn't know how to feed an animal that young. Everyone spouts about what's best for the animal but no one was willing to just let him live in the only "home" he'd ever known.. which is what kinda ticked me off. Why not just allow Noah's Lost Ark to "buy" the cub from Long and be done with it.. noooooo.. Long et al had to create a media circus around the animal instead of just handling it fairly and humanely.
Thanks for letting me vent.
