Everyday Matters

2004_01_everydaymatters.jpg

This post on Danny Gregory's book, Everyday Matters, is way overdue. Gothamist read it last fall, but, in a strange twist, other things got in the way. We say strange because if there's anything to be taken from the inspiring memoir/essay about life in New York, it's that life is to be savored. The book opens with this statement: "Two years before I started drawing, my wife was run over by a subway train. Sounds really terrible, I know. But, well, this book is about how art and New York City saved my life."

Everyday Matters drops the reader into Gregory and his family's life as they recover from the accident and reassemble their life together through the intimacy of Gregory's drawings and handwritten journal-style entries. It's tragic, moving, beautiful, passionate, and encouraging; in short, a story about life in New York.

The Morning News has a very nice interview with Danny Gregory from last fall. You can see some of Gregory's other work here or check out his blog.

Buy Everyday Matters from Amazon.

And, today, Danny Gregory is also playing a cooler version of courtroom sketch artist with his Martha Stewart trial drawings at The Morning News. [via Gawker]

Dear Jen, Thank You for a very kind mention about Danny's book. You flatter us...him! It's very meaningful to hear your comments about "Everyday Matters". It can be strange sometimes to share such personal things yet we thought alot about it before goinmg ahead with the book. Hearing from someone like you makes us feel that it wasn't a mistake to put the story out there. Oh, but, wait..."there are no mistakes", Right?

Let's try to remember that! Thanks an d I'll be watching you for more insight on other topics you may cover!

Take care,
Love,
Patti

Danny Gregory's book is absolutely beautiful. I read it in one swoop a few weeks ago-- couldn't put it down.

Thank you for the article about Everyday Matters.
It is a book I will definitely look for.

I also enjoy reading your column. Gothamist is on my daily list of things to check, because there is always something inspiring, whimsical or bizarre to read and think about.

Right now, in SuperBowlCity (aka Houston), the local press and newscasts are just teeming with FB coverage; it's nice to know that somewhere, there are people leading real lives.

Thanks.
