Gothamist Goes to the Little Leagues

After the great suggestion from eebmore yesterday, Gothamist wants to sponsor a Little League baseball team. It will be a great way to support the community, groom our future readers, and wear white turtlenecks under blue blazers, a la George Steinbrenner. We're leaning towards sponsoring a team of seven year–olds with West Side Little League, as WSLL hold many games at Riverside Park – right outside the uptown offices. And while we may dress like Steinbrenner, don't expect any of his shenanigans from us, especially since the rules do it all: "If a child does not want to play, the coach will encourage but not coerce the child to play."
So, in the spring and summer, you'll be able to look forward to weekly updates about the team: Their progress, morale, opinons about the hottest toys, most interesting strange colored foods. Ideally, the team will be called the Gothamist Pandas, but apparently team names are already set up. Some have mentioned that "Pandas" is the kind of team name kids get teased, even beat up, over, but how can that be worse than being a Red Sox fan in New York? We're investigating the issue and we'll keep you posted.
Gothamist is going to fund most of the $800 sponsorship ourselves, but we'd appreciate any contributions our readers would like to make. You can donate as much or as little as you'd like via the Paypal link below.
Thank you!

Are you serious? Where is all this sponsorship money supposed to come from anyway?
Lastly, is gambling on Little League games legal?
well, most of it will be coming from jake dobkin and jen chung, as well as our silent partner, who i will refer to as "Lance"- but please please please cough up some dough! Think of the children!
I see Jen and Jake as Steinbrenner and Cashmen -- Jen up in some box (she will bring her own plexiglass to the games) phoning Jake down below yelling at him to trade the first baseman for a guy who can hit...
Jen doing commercials ala the Jeter AMEX ones... 'I hear you're staying up late watching South Park!'
God.. this is bliss...
Yes, I'll be making expensive trades (or trying to entice kids with expensive video games) and asking Jake to get me an eggplant calzone.
i worry, gothamist, that this little project might be "... all for the glorification
of your massive ego!" :)
opt1
(the correct response? 'hire this man!')
Do donations come with box seats? Will we have waitress service? I hate passing the hot dogs down the line in the cheap seats. Will we be able to hang with the players at the China Club's VIP roof deck? This is starting to sound like a great idea.
Thanks for the clarification Jake. This "Lance" must be a big spender, since we all know Jake Dobkin and Jen Chung don't have $400 each hanging around to spend on this!
can we buy league tshirts?
good lookin out! i coached pop warner football for 11 and 12 year olds from my neighborhood boys & girls club this fall. lots of fun and a great way to give back. jake, my funds are tight, but i sent you a little dough out of principle.
so far we're raised $50! That's not bad, and it's only 11am- how much can we raise today?
-Jake
If I donate, may I can be the Beanie (Vince Vaughn) character from Old School? I've always wanted to be that kinda male.
lance eats faberge egg omletes for breakfast.
Lance also eats Kobe steaks every single day (he has three stomachs).
And, sure, Hilton, you can be Beanie and yell "Earmuffs!" whenever we want to say something off color in front of the kids. Which means you'll be screaming a lot.
i want a gothamist baseball shirt. must have half-sleeeves.
we're up to $110 at 3pm!
I'm good for 100bucks... Jen knows about my Paypal issues... but check's in the mail.
Will Gothamist still be able to name the team the Gothamist Pandas? If it's because they have issues with promoting the website, how about the "Bad News Pandas", or the "Bad Blog Pandas"?
5:19pm- we've gotten $110 bucks in cash and commitments for $450 more! Who's good for a little more? Squeeze that wallet, baby!
$310 received- and a total of $560 promised! Come on- i know some of you must be rich new york bankers and such- pony up for a good cause!
I'll put in $10, i just need to remember what my paypal account/password is...
if memory serves me, the team names are actual major league names, so gothamist should really duke it out for the mets (or the yankees i suppose), or if all else fails, the giants or the dodgers. and i'm with corie - gothamist baseball t's are a must.
yes, i remember them being major league names also. when i played in the GVLL, we had the team name on the front and the sponsor name on the back where a player's name would be. the only team name i remember was the phillies and we were pretty damn bad.
In memory of Andy Pettitte, I'm sending you some dough.
