i'm returning to the homeland (pittsburgh) for the first time in 4 years. my brother is returning for the first time in many more than that. i feel like we're willingly putting ourselves into a lifetime movie of the week script. i am very scared.
That is a bit scary. Good luck! And take walks to get out of the house. And bring a journal to scribble all your complaints in. What else...oh, and an MP3 player/Discman so you can listen to music and tune people out, a good book to bury your head in, and a sunny disposition and the knowledge you're not there for longer than the holidays. Holidays are always loaded times. I'm seeing going to my aunt and uncle's house in NJ, which is relaxing compared with the insanity of going to Hong Kong, where my parents now live (as well as 75% of relatives on both sides of the family), during Christmas. And I only mean insanity in the best sense of the word.
I, on the other hand, will not be going to Pittsburgh for the first time in 4 years - for that matter, I don't think my family has ever had Thanksgiving at our own home. So this year, I'm thankful that my mom's friend is getting married next weekend and therefore my aunt and uncle get to make the wonderful 8 hr car ride instead of us.
Tenafly, New Jersey. The epicenter of the Northeast - mwah ha ha I can just hear your seething jealousy.
i'll be dining at a friend's in bay ridge, and possibly also my boss' in carrol gardens... if i could, i'd pass on the turkey to have thanksgiving kielbasa in warsaw with the fiance
Tenafly represent!
Though, I'll be in the exotic and faraway land known as the Upper East Side, for a change this year...
Yes well... I make the pilgrimage from the UES to Tenafly annually. You know the hood?
So excited... will be having thanksgiving in Memphis (yes, bbq turkey is on the menu!) and then off to Nooooh York City for the long weekend... Looking for suggestions of places to eat lunch downtown (Soho/Village)...
jen, thanks for your advice. i also forgot to mention that our parents don't own a computer. i'm not sure that applies to anything your said, but it does somehow make everything scarier.
Last year was my first Thanksgiving in New York (having just moved from Indiana), and I spent it alone, which was much less depressing than I thought it would be.
This year, though, my girlfriend and I are hosting a small dinner party for friends. I've never hosted for Thanksgiving, so I'm excited.

Your plans sound terrific I'm glad this year will be even better than the last for you. Enjoy! I'm sure you will be a wonderful host.
Thanks, Ari. I have a long shopping list now; may be time to try out FreshDirect!
