Day One of a 1000
There is something very underwhelming about the title of Reid Stowe and his girlfriend Soanya Ahmad's blog entry today: Day One. But if it's only the first day of a 1,000-day sea voyage, we understand the instinct to not overdo things early. Yesterday, the boyfriend-girlfriend team sailed away from a pier in Hoboken and out of New York Bay into the Atlantic on their 70-foot boat "The Schooner Anne." They don't intend on returning to land or even stopping in a harbor to resupply for approximately two years and nine months, or exactly 1,000 days. Such an undertaking would be daunting for any experienced sailor, so we were surprised to read this at WNBC's site:
Ahmad is the daughter of immigrants from Guyana, and she’s never sailed before, except up and down the Hudson River.
And here's an excerpt from Soanya Ahmad's first blog post from sea:
I haven't gotten seasick yet and am enjoying the ethereal beauty around me. It certainly is quiet out here and it's a bit of a relief after the buzz of our preparations and departure. Reid is on another much needed cat nap and I'm ready to start organizing the last minute items that were thrown onboard yesterday. What a wonderful beginning!
If we were taking a sea voyage of 1,000 days with no chances to resupply, we would not be waiting until the "last minute" to throw things aboard and we hope we wouldn't be pleasantly surprised at a lack of seasickness our first day on calm seas. Reid Stowe must be a very persuasive boyfriend. We wish them both luck on their journey.

I have been somewhat passively observing Reed's years long and difficult quest to go on this epic journey. The Schooner Anne is a very beautiful boat which at the same time seems quite fragile when faced with the vastness of the world's oceans for 1,000 days.
I wish Reed and Soanya clear sailing and travelling mercies and look forward to reading about their progress.
who gives a crap.
This couple is destined to be featured in an episode of "I Shouldn't Be Alive."
Yet another reason that bloggers will all have a special place in Hell so they can irritate each other.
They're going to die.
Reid has been working on this trip for so long. I'm delighted he finally found his mermaid and was able to set sail. Visiting the boat a few years ago was really neat since most boats around here are pleasure crafts.
May the winds take your troubles away, Reid & Sonya.
i couldn't make it through a 2-hour trip to home depot with my girlfriend
good luck, you crazy kids
sounds like they have no idea what theyre in for.
Wish them well.
One thing I don't get: Reid's blog only lists HIM as the storyteller, he doesn't even mention Soanya's name in the subtitle. And he gloats in another post at how Yahoo listed his news story as Number One all day Sunday, as if he is in this more for rating and Fame and PR for his book and movie later, than really doing this for real reasons. He is a fame seeker. Like all Americans. see the subtitle of his blog. he is not for real and he is not giving Soanya credit. WHY? is he is this for OTHER reasons. the media should be asking this?
This is how REid's blog reads now: "1000 Days Non-stop at Sea:
Stories of Reid Stowe (sic), the Schooner (sic) Anne, and her Quest (Sic) to set a new sailing record of 1,000 Days @ Sea w/o stopping or resupply."
Notice no mention of Soanya's name there. Why is that? I wrote to him on his blog and asked him to correct his to say "stories of Reid Stowe and Soanya Ahmad....." But he deletede my comment and refused to make change. Go figure.
turns out, Reid did not make that blog title, his land team support staff did, so he is not to blame. they explained it on the blog now and it will be fixed soon. So happy sailing Reid and AS!
and NOW the new blogsite does say in the MASt hea:
stories by Reid Stowe and Soanya Ahmad..... SO THEY ARE LISTENING TO THE BLOGOSPHERE
THanks
hmm,, shades of yesteryear? seems he picks young chicks, for his dream voyage. again now with Ms Ahmad. What will ensue?
from 1999 NY Times wedding announcement:
"Three years ago, Mr. Reid Stowe met Laurence Guillen, now 26, (now 34) while visiting a boat-building school where her father teaches, in La Rochelle in her native France. Ms. Guillen, tall and thin as a mast, looks like Christy Turlington with ringlets. ''She knew about boats, but she didn't like sailors,'' said Mr. Stowe, who is twice divorced. ''She was more into French intellectualism, French art and movies.''
1999 PINGBACK: "Mr. Stowe, a painter and sculptor, ....At 47, he is preparing for his most ambitious adventure, 1,000 straight days at sea, out of sight of land, which would set a record. He says the journey will be as difficult and disorienting as traveling to Mars."
fast forward to 2007.....2008.....2009....2010
