H.S. Basketball Brawl at Madison Square Garden

2007_03_brawl.jpgIn an incident WCBS 2 calls "March Badness," a wild fight broke out last night at Madison Square Garden during a high-school basketball game between Brooklyn schools Lincoln and Boys & Girls. WCBS 2 has video that shows "a girl slapping a boy. The boy then swung around and tried to punch her. Other boys jumped him and then the NYPD moved in." And then:

Another image showed a cop pulling a fan over a railing and then other cops joining in as they beat him with billy clubs.

The male, who was wearing a brown jacket, was pulled over the railing by school safety officers and appeared to not be resisting, but four officers are seen beating him. Two of the officers struck the boy several times with their batons.

Dear God! Apparently the fighting started when a Lincoln player was fouled hard by a Boys & Girls player. Though a hard foul was called, the Lincoln player went after his opponent, requiring the refs to separate them. And fights broke out in the stands and moved into the streets.

Shots were fired outside in the streets near Madison Square Garden, but no one was injured. Other groups of teens had headed to Times Square, fighting with each other and with shop employees, including an incident where a girl took a pizza employee's hairpiece.

Police closed 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. Oh, and Lincoln won, 77-50.

Chris Rock: As soon as black people have a good time, niggers come along and ruin everything!

anyone ever notice that this never happens at golf tournaments? now, i'm not saying it's because the participants here were black... oh wait, yes i am.

was Sharpton there to condemn it?

He was too busy getting high off his hairspray.

Sharpton only has an interracial fetish.

this was instigated by a white woman who threw a wotter bottle at two people. She then ran away after causing all this mayhem.

It doesn't really matter who caused it. What is up with insane sports fans? Especially high school sports fans? Pride is great, but this is just stupid. It's just as bad as the soccer riots that happen in Europe. Maybe there should be a moratorium on sports for a year. That will teach these idiots to act a little more civilized.

Ah basketball, the ultimate ghetto sport.

Spending my first 25 years growing up in another part of the country but living the last 3+ here, I can attest to the fact that high school kids from NYC are the most disrespectful, arrogant, belligerent, and insipid group of kids I have ever had the misfortune of running into. They have close to ZERO class, and that is a shame.

Gee, racist comments on a gothamist post. Shocking. Only one irked me enough to post, though, and that's the absolute shit-eruption that came out of Ron Mexico's keyboard.

So Ron, after living 25 years in one place and then moving here, you have some sort of perspective on youth culture? You can "attest" to the ways of NYC youth, based on your vast and varied experiences you had living in one other place? That's like me saying "I've been to one other comments section in my life besides this one, and I can attest to the fact that Ron Mexico is the most idiotic person in America"

I agree with Ron Mexico, and I've lived here my whole life.

Lol, I wonder if the gun that was fired was stashed inside, Or was planted outside in preparation for something jumping off ? I hate to say it but When black folk get together niggers find their way along for the ride . I guess the "Nice people at the Garden will have to beef up there security practices for future High school games .

Some places have found a neat solution to the problem of fan violence at high school basketball games - no fans. The teams play in an empty gym, with no one allowed in except league officials and members of the media.

Classic rebuttal DB, you said nothing to dissuade my comments on the kids, only personal attacks on me, way to prove your point dude.

DB you moron, there's a reason why most NYC high schools have metal detectors. It's not even about the classes anymore in these high schools

F ucking n iggers . End of story

Funniest part: pizza guy's toupee loss.
Sounds like something out of a cartoon.
"You not givin' me a slice mo-fo ... i'm taking that dead animal off yo' head mo-fo."

DB if you think so highly of NYC high school kids, I strongly suggest that you hurry yourself up to be on the next rotation to teach in one of our fine inner city schools (where the needs are the greatest) and we'll see how quick your tune will change.

This has been going on since the Eighties. There had been no violence at MSG till now, since they imposed more security measures and I believe a strict ultimatum from MSG management. Either shape up or you'll never play in the Garden again.

Ron- I pointed out the fallacy of your logic, which was "If A is worse than B, then A is worse than B-Z"

#15: Ever been to Baltimore? Detroit? Philly? No? I have. There are metal detectors there too. It’s a national problem, not an NYC problem.

#18: These kids are punks. No doubt about it. I didn't defend them. I pointed out Ron's flawed logic. What exactly about that "tune" needs to change?

db.... I bet people really hate to be around you. Your family even...

When I compare this to my high school experience (25 yrs ago), I think the biggest difference now is that more of the "tough kids" have guns. Back in my HS days, I recall quite a few fights, but no one ever pulled out a gun - and no one was killed.

This isn't about race - it's about handguns.

Paying taxes to support this garbage?

And Ratner wants to put a male basketball arena in the middle of Prospect Heights, Brooklyn?

Is this what we want in Brooklyn?

I think more of these kids should listen to Marvin Gaye.

Nothing Ron said was racist. It was the truth (the truth does not equal racism). He made a blanket statement about the youth culture in this city which stems from 60 years of bad parenting or grandparenting—doing nothing but bitching about how the system is white and repressive. Get over it. The public schools are free and yet you still find the time to bitch and moan about how you can't get an education.

cripes! stop whining and do something with you life.

Charlie Rose said it best: "What the heck have you (the black community) been doing for the last 60 years?"

Also, #23 hit the nail on the head. If you wanna talk about a waste of taxes, then this is the debate. Rebuilding Wash Sq Park is a waste of taxes? Hardly.

This isn't about race - it's about handguns.
It's about a cultural pathology that inhibits interpersonal communication and glorifies the violent resolution of competing interests.

Unless it's about assholes who don't know how to behave.

Charlie Rose said it best: "What the heck have you (the black community) been doing for the last 60 years?"

I know! I know! Social welfare. Entitlement. Al Sharpton. A whole lotta bitching!

I walked right through that crowd on 42nd street. it was total chaos. They were like animals.

It won't happen at Atlantic Yards because they can't afford to get into those games . It'll be an all white crowd at Nets games .

These animals only had to pay a few bucks to get in MSG for this game .

Sad . You don't see that happening at the Catholic city b-ball games .

See what happened when the Thugged out NBA went to vegas this year for the all-star game . Same theme ... Pure Thugs !

They shoulda Stomped the Yard instead.

I 2nd The Edge's comment.

The first thing one sees when entering Adlai E. Stevenson High School is a giant sign by the security desk. "No Spectators at Any Sporting Events."

These two schools should just skip right to "No Sporting Events."
