Adventures in Street Pornography Part 2

2007_3_streetporn2.jpg

Seems that gigantic pornolicious cheesecake shots aren't limited to the Lower East Side-- we spotted this one at the corner of Houston and Lafayette. This advertisement is slightly less blatant, though-- note the tasteful hand-placement.

If you can find a larger piece of streetporn, we'd be surprised-- but send 'em in and we'll see if they are newsworthy.

This is porn to you?!?! What are you, some sort of Jihadist? I admit it is somewhat erotic, but it's a far cry from porn. It amazes me how repressed americans are, the slightest hint or eroticism and they go bezerk. You would think this was Saudi Arabia and you only see women hovering around in a black burqua. It's a female body, and yes, if you are a healthy human you will find it tantalizing, get over it, get a girlfriend, release the frustration and spare us. This is alos quite counter productive as it only serves to reinforce the unfortuante notion held by women, imposed upon them by a domineering patriarchy, that they should be ashamed of their bodies and sexuality. You asshole.

Hel-looooo...that spot has been a calvin klein porn spot for years now. they always have a large, nearly fully exposed young woman (sometimes with an equally exposed young man). and NOW it is news...why? where were you when the elle macpherson ads were all over downtown: decapitated woman in sheer, nearly see-thru bras and panties.

I fail to see anything wrong with this ad. It doesn't seem overly distasteful to me. Skin is skin. There's no need to be so uptight over it. There must be actual news that needs reporting, instead of this.

do you even masterbate?

This isn't Kansas, it's New York. So who cares if there's a "risque" billboard. Get over it.

Porn for Jake is some egomaniac loser’s spray painted tag on a brick wall.

Seriously? Sorry it isn't graffiti, Jake.

Speaking of masturbating. How about we get a huge group of people together to go jerk off in front of it? Now, that's performance art! I'll film it and put it on YouTube.

There is a mistake in the post.
The "offensive" picture is not posted.

"You would think this was Saudi Arabia and you only see women hovering around in a black burqua."

Yeah - that's exactly what I was thinking. Pointing out that a billboard is a bit racy is analogous to living in a fundamentalist, repressive country.

I can understand thinking that Jake's overreacting a bit, but that comparison is just plain ridiculous. It's similar to people comparing having their bags searched on the subway to Nazi Germany.

mihow, you're speaking my language. ;)

who says there's a problem with the ad? i've got no prob with giant lingerie shots on the street. i mean, i wouldn't want to live directly across the street from it, but i wouldn't want to live directly across the street from any large billboard.

i just think it's interesting that giant cheesecake shots are appearing outside of times square, which used to be the home for erotic ads. has anyone seen a similar shot out in queens or brooklyn?

The other day as I was passing through that area, the area where Lafayette meets Houston, I said to my husband, "This is slowly turning into Little Time's Square."

I love it. She puts me in my place and makes me feel like a man. Bravo!

Wow, this is considered offensive? She looks to be a very beautiful woman. So many Americans are really strange..

Great spot for a taco stand.

You guys got it all wrong! Jake's not being repressive! He just wants to look at hot women for free. Look at Jake's last line:

"If you can find a larger piece of streetporn, ...send 'em in ..."

IOW, anyplace else I can look at babes in their underwear?

Well, you know what they say...

"The Internet is for Porn"

What does "IOW" mean?

And am I the only person who laughed over the taco stand comment?

This post, along with the American Apparel post, is free advertising for these corporate entities. American Apparel and Calvin Klein thank you for the additional exposure, Gothamist.

IOW - In Other Words

If you don't think this is porn, you're gay.

Thank you Calvin.

"note the tasteful hand-placement."

Oh, is THAT what it is?. I thought she was pleasuring herself.

The best part of that picture is what is barely visible below the CK ad. The rear of the Chinese Restaurant Supply company is the rear of the Pet Kennel facing the next street over. I always laugh when I walk by there. Signage for both businesses are side by side on that dark strip below the CK ad facing Houston.

One night at Arturo's (summer 2003) I had the pleasure of sitting with the proprietor himself. I asked him how he felt about the non-stop monster sized models advertised on the building opposite his restaurant on the southeast corner of Houston & THompson. He replied that it was the best thing that ever happened on that block.
RIP Arturo!

OH MY GOD! It's almost like we're standing on a beach next to a girl wearing a bikini! The horror! Quick, where was that post about how to be a high-tech graffiti "artist"?! To the graffiti-mobile!

Seriously...what's with Gothamist's outrage at lingerie ads that have been around the city for years? (And the obsession with graffiti?)

i could be wrong, but im almost sure that jen and jake have both complained about the "disneyfication" of manhattan.. but now that there are some racy ads around the city.. they're up in arms? i don't get it. would you guys rather have giant pictures of your cats posted on billboards?

You have to wonder how many cities (other than NYC) think it is appropriate to have ads that are practically a block long. I can't think of any--not even in London's Picadilly Circus.

Regardless of the content of its content, this ad is entirely too big, too ugly, and too intrusive for what is essentially a residential area.

WHo cares about the panty-model-of-the-month. That American Airlines banner makes me wanna ....

I think it is completely inappropriate. What next? See-through panties? A hint of pubic hair? Maybe even some moisture to go with it? If you want erotica, go buy it at the newsstand. It doesn't belong on a gigantic public billboard. Soon all the streets will be lined with this crap from desperate fashion houses.

If you don't think this is porn, you are gay.

'Whatever' has made the only cogent complaint in this thread.

I'm on board with those who find the complaints to be stereotypical American puritanicalism. How utterly juvenile.

What's this you say? Companies are using scantily-clad women to sell their products? When did this start happening?

This has nothing with the topic but i have to say "I FREAKING MISS THE RED-LIGHT DISTRIC NYC DAYS. TIMES SQUARE SUCKS NOW, WEST VILLAGE SUCKS NOW AND EVEN THE L.E.S IS STARTING TO GET TO TRENDY. BRING BACK THE "TAXI DRIVER" AND "WARRIORS" NYC DAYS!!!!!

Personally, I'll settle for the days of singing and dancing in the streets, instead of brawling and shooting.

But that's just me.

Am I the only one that thought Jake's tongue was firmly planted in his cheek when he called it street-porn?

Holy crap, y'all... oversensitive much?

how much did calvin klein pay gothamist to put up that ad on your website and call it news uh i mean street porn?

i just realized that jake referred to a vagina as "cheesecake"

...ew.

I just wish there was something for chicks to look at. I'm visual, too. I bet the same people posting here, accusing anyone who objects to the ad as being soooo uptight and conservative, would balk at the site of a scantily clad man.

What is this? "Attack the pussy Week"!! Get a freaking grip ! It's just a billboard ad, It's not like the model is naked . If you don't like the picture then don't look at it File a report with whoever the hell you need to . Whoever posted this story needs a serious reconstructing of their personal hobbies !

poon is good for the soul.
