New R160 Trains Good to Stay on N and Q Lines
Some good news for N and Q train riders: The snazzy new R160 trains successfully completed its 30 day test period. NY1 reports that an entire order of 700 new trains will be on the N and Q lines by the end of 2007. As for the R and W lines, you'll still have the groddy trains.
We love the 30 day test period. If there are any snags, the testing has to start all over again, and we can deduct that there were: The R160s on the N and Q lines went into testing in August, had to re-start the testing period 24 hours later, and now, about three months later, we get the word that all is okay.
The R160 trains on the N and Q lines are made by Kawasaki; the ones running on the A line are by Alstom and are still in its test period. We hope the problems Alstom had last year with manufacturing are in the past.

Bottom photographs of the R160 trains from Alstom on the A line from reader Njoki - thanks!

i love those old R/W cars -- great colors, wide aisle, smooth ride.
seriously. I think the MTA's money would be better spent on station rennovations and infrastructure improvements.
The new cars are really quite nice and all, but are the old ones *really* that bad? Many stations on the other hand, are absolutely disgusting.
Well I guess this is a good thing . The {N},&{Q} trains use some of the oldest cars in the fleet . I agree with the above posts concerning the station improvements . This is something that needs upgrading as well. It gives the MTA the chance to get rid of those older trains currently inuse along the {C},{E}, {B},{J},{M}, &{Z} lines . So quit complaining .
The old train such as on the B lines, i take that to school every morning, runs faster (and is older) then the Q train fleets.. The B trains are just more tough and strong oppsed to the R 63 fleet if im not mistaken.
The R40 has great AC(B J M etc) and a strong movement
why r-142's to #7 line and why plan the change
